Unanswered questions

Not all questions are as consequential as say, “what’s the meaning of life?”. I have sometimes pondered that serious question. The result was either an incomplete answer or a headache.

More often
a question forms as my mind drifts along while listening to songs.

Here’s a recent example:
Which woman was that witchy woman the Eagles sang about?

She probably made her appearance during the witching hour.

I just want an answer

I have more. (a reason to keep reading)

Why can't more public restrooms be little temples?

The public restrooms mentioned in the sign above were worth the visit. They were functional and stylish which is a much needed approach to improve public restrooms.

 ðŸ˜•

Next question to ponder.

I remember listening to this song back in the 60's. Even though we had no idea what the words meant we listen over and over. It had a catchy tune and some whistling. It was number 1 on the charts for a few weeks.

Can songs in foreign languages still become hits in countries having very few listeners that understand that language today? Do remember this song?

👴

I enjoy listening to the song “Save The Last Dance For Me” but the guy is either over-confident about his relationship or wants to test his girl’s willpower to temptation. Since I never impressed dance partners with a great show of my dancing ability, I knew my last dance would be compared to her other dancer partners that night. My question is why bring the competition of others to your relationship?

However that said, this clip of Bruce Springsteen dancing with his mom shows how the song can make sense. A very sweet video that’s worth watching.

What if’s two

What if I post another “what if” post? Well, you are reading the answer to that easy question. Oh my last “what if” post was last year. (here’s the link)

what if everyone grabs a seat and calms down

What if I titled this post “Last Chance”? I doubt it would make more people read it but for some reason I see this phrase used in emails offering something to buy. I’ve noticed last chances are typically repeated so unfortunately the last email will not be the last of it.

What if I got a comment from someone asking me to join a secret group? Actually one recently showed up here. You will not see it since it was flagged and I deleted it. It provided me with a laugh since a truly secret group would not drop invites in a very public comment section. Maybe they were actually a formerly secret group.

What if Sheryl Crow invited me over for breakfast. I would certainly eagerly accept but I would reject any offers of french toast. There’s no way I could erase the imagine her lyrics create in my mind (“If It Makes You Happy”):

Scrape the mold off the bread
And serve you french toast again

What if I looked at the hand of fate and saw the middle finger waving back at me? Would it suggest that I change the road I’m on?

What if a politician used these lyrics from Kansas’ song “Carry On Wayward Son” in a speech:

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don’t know

What if you leave a comment at the end of this post?

OK Fine

Fine art, fine wine, how about a big fine.
Or consider this:
Collector of fine beer,
Collector of fine blogs,
Collector of bad questions.

Over the decades of traveling around, but often sitting at my desk, I’ve discovered many strange unusual things attract enough interest to be collected. Sure you probably heard of string being collected (hey I bet there has been a huge drop in string usage since the introduction of plastic bags but are string collectors now rich?).

Royal wedding cake (link)

Slices of wedding cake are not on my list of collectable items. However, add celebrity or history to most anything from a strand of hair to a chair and you’ll create a collectable. Not too long ago a slice of royal wedding cake (in a very nice tin) was auctioned off to a wedding cake collector (I guess). Historical items probably are smart choice for collecting but what qualifies as historical?

I rank that last question as a good question. However, I’ve discovered that I have a talent (curse?) for bad questions.

A question even more than a statement can reveal your inner thinking. Certain situations transform into confrontation when a bad question is mistakenly voiced. Think of the bad taste of foot in mouth.

Not wondering at all is difficult but wondering while remaining silent often allows you to shift to other more promising discussions. Unfortunately, I don’t remember my own guidance in these situations. Instead I’ll drop a bad question. Really I’m not intentionally constructing a bad question. I just fail to think through how my question might be interpreted. I’ve noticed the reply to a bad question most likely is another question. Typically the question shooting back at me is “why are you asking that?” or something worst.

What starts as ping pong escalates to a explosive smart missiles with me being left with only dumb bomb questions/answers.

I need to start a collection of bad questions so that I have a list to check before acting on my wondering. I plan to become a collector of bad questions.

As Paul Simon once wrote (and sang):

I want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard

I don’t need redemption but recognition with a side of understanding would be a good finish to a heated exchange.

Dancing (an almost non-existent skill of mine) might also improve situations. Dancing out of the way is classier than ducking.

that hodgepodge game

While I don’t often play along with the Wednesday Hodgepodge meme/game (hosted by From This Side of the Pond), I like this week's questions. While I strive to expand my vocabulary I'm still going to refer to this as a game or maybe a blog game. Here's the last time I played along - post link.

1. What does retirement mean to you?
Are you planning for it, not thinking about it, looking forward to it, or dreading it?

I’m in it. I didn’t plan to be in it as quick as I did. Dread it? Oh come on, lighten up. Thank God we are healthy so those problems could be something to dread I guess. It’s fine, not great all the time. Time - now that’s something which is very different that before. If time really was money - I would be a billionaire. You do need to think/plan about how to spend it. I have a few hobbies one of which is blogging. It has allowed us to spend much more time with grandkids (honestly I believe you need to be careful not to become a permanent babysitter). Oh, learning about social security options, retirement account tax issues, Medicare, etc., helps your planning. Matinee movies, time to read the morning paper, youtube videos, read books - great benefits

2. It's International Guitar Month...do you play? Does anyone in your family play? What's a song you especially like to hear played on the guitar or a favorite song featuring the guitar?

Two of my favorite artists are Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana (oye como va). Thanks for this question - I'm listening as I finish this post. I do have in-laws that can play but I can only carry a tune when I have my I-pod in my pocket.

3. What's your comfort food?

Now this is an example of question I would skip. A better question I think is “what’s your uncomfort food?” For me that would be sushi - can’t stand it.

4. What's one activity or area of your life where you absolutely never procrastinate?

This question, #1, and #2 are the reason I decided to play along today. The answer is strongly related to #1. In retirement you should allow yourself to procrastinate. The hell with schedules, deadlines and shaving. Most things will still be there when you get around to it. That said there are certainly two things that typically need timely attention, bills and taxes. I don’t procrastinate in those areas. I’ve finished my taxes before the month of April for many many years. Now the laundry, cut the grass, etc. - hey I told you I was retired.

5. Who does the grocery shopping in your house? Does your local store bag the groceries for you or is it a do-it-yourself kind of place? Do you like someone packing your groceries?

Probably 90% or more is fortunately done by my wife. You know my answer to #4 could be a problem for me in this area. When I do venture out into the crazy aisles of supermarket (I can remember long ago there were called just markets then they became super) I typically go to a-bag-it-yourself place (note, there are few bags needed on my trips). Yeah, someone packing the bags - great idea. Oh I hate those completely robotic self checkout lanes - save those jobs for humans.

6. What's the coolest thing you've seen in nature?

Many things - nature is wonderful. One experience that is wonderful to recall is lying on hill far from any city, one vacation night with daughter and wife as we watched the full brilliant Milky Way raise over us.

7. Share a favorite quote about home.

Hey get off my lawn. No just kidding. Actually the hostess of this game has a few great thoughts on this in her post.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
I typically read the posts generated by this game more than I play it. Mostly because the questions go over my attention span (you pay attention to things that interest you). But the nice part of this game is it always includes the open question, "insert your own random thought".

Hodgepodge reminds of two things. One is not a thing but a person, my uncle Hodge who I mostly lost contact with due to his divorce long ago. Divorce does have wide spread effects that you don't realize for a long time. Secondly it reminds me of Dodge as in "get the hell out of Dodge". I've felt that way many times and I don't even live in Dodge. Yeah it's just an expression but sometimes it's a feeling.

lets work on this

Bloggers are very creative, so I'm asking the right group.

Later in life (later is a nice relative term) a common occurrence happens when we look at celebrity news. It happens enough that it really needs a name.  A hashtag would be even more useful.

Here's my description of it: You are reading a magazine, a newspaper (ok I know I'm one of few still doing that), or maybe watching the news and it hits you - Celebrity so-and-so is how OLD? When the hell did that happen? Oh shit that means I'm old. It can't be. I remember him/her when they were smoking hot.

Calista Flockhart turned 50 last month. Yanni turned 60 last month (he was in his 40’s last year right?). How is this possible?

Dick Clark at most any age

Dick Clark (died at 82) had a youthful look well into his 70’s. I wondered if he was an alien since he didn’t appear to age.

Whatever we call this it's popular. It's so popular that the first section of my aunt’s AARP magazine that I read is their 'Big 5-oh' page (alright full disclosure - it’s MY AARP magazine). They also list 6-oh 7-oh etc.

So if that celeb news shocked you a little, what do you call that event that just happened to you?

Calling it "oh shit" is not descriptive enough. Here's some of my suggestions:

Ohnocantbe
Denialstop
Timestamped
AARPatize
Celeb Security

As you can see I need some help with this. Please leave your suggestions in the comments.

a reliable hodgepodge

I’ve been distracted from blog posting lately. While I don’t often play along with the Wednesday Hodgepodge meme/game (hosted by From This Side of the Pond), it is nice that you can pretty much count on it being there for you to join. (here’s the last time I played along)

Here's my entry for this week's list of questions.

1. I'm celebrating a birthday this week so a question relating to aging feels appropriate. Douglas MacArthur is quoted as saying, 'You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear; as young as your hope, as old as your despair.' Would you agree? If not, why not?

Ahh, sorta agree. Attitude is certainly important. Being positive is much healthier than being negative. However, you can’t stop the overall aging process.

2. What remarkable feat, interesting piece of trivia, or historical event occurred on your birth day and month? Not necessarily your same birthyear, just the same date/same month.

Without internet searching, I know that George Washington was born on the date after my birthday. My brother has his birthday next to Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. These facts helped me remember my brother’s birthday all these years.

3. Describe a time or circumstance where you wanted to 'have your cake and eat it too.'

Had I known this question was coming I would have baked you cake. Well that’s a lie. I have never baked a cake in my life. I would rather have my pie and eat it too. I suspect most people would like to have their paycheck and spend it too.

4. What's something you do that makes you feel young? Something that makes you feel old?

Playing with grandkids.  Recovering after playing with grandkids.

5. When did you last do something that was 'a piece of cake'?

This morning making and eating my bowl of cereal. I don’t understand why more people don’t eat cereal. Could it be that it is not cake?

6. Beef, wine, and cheese all improve with age. What else would you add to that list? (not necessarily food or beverage)

Wisdom, but not all the time which is similar to beef not always aging well at least in our fridge.

7. If I were to have a giveaway when we hit Volume 200 in the Hodgepodge, what should I give away? By my calculations we'll hit Volume 200 on November 26th, the day before Thanksgiving, which means whoever wins would have whatever it is by Christmas.

Wow 200 - maybe something related to 200? (a box of 200 paperclips)

8. Insert your own random thought here.

Oh yeah, the random thought - I have an abundance of random thoughts. Most of them disappear quicker than I can type. I have been wondering about my hobby of blogging. I still consider it a good hobby for brain activity but not so much for physical activity.  What do you think?

appetizers

Why do they exist?

I just don’t understand. I’m not too refined but I’m fine.

quick appetizer?

A dictionary definition says that appetizers are used to stimulate one’s appetite. This could be my problem because my appetite rarely needs stimulation. It’s typically ready to go, anytime anywhere. But really is my appetite that different? Would a skinner person out there please stand up and explain why their appetite needs stimulation.

Now, I know there are eating disorders. That's a medical problem and you'll need to check other sites for that discussion.  However, I’ve had plenty of missed orders related to my food. Often if you complain, good restaurants will give the mistake to you free or give you a free dessert. I once became a family legend with my ordering of Oriental Chicken Salad.

Much better restaurant than Applebees

I recall it was on slow trip through Indiana. Typically I'm very low keyed, even mellow. My motto is lighten up people. But don't lighten up the ingredients on my Oriental Chicken Salad. When you sprinkle driving time on top of hunger I get easily provoked.

The Applebees was busy but not overly so and we were seated quickly. I knew I was ordering the Oriental Chicken Salad when I flipped on the blinker to exit the interstate. Wife and kids decided their orders, gave the order, and then waited. The problem was not the slow turn around.

The orders were messed up. Daughter's Bacon Cheeseburger had no bacon. Then I noticed my salad was missing those crispy oriental noodles. I love crunchy.  Crispy crunchy noodles are the essence of this salad.

The waiter tells me they are out of crispy noodles. Too many problems here - I need some face time with the manager.

I bluntly explain to the manager that had I been told about their shortage of crispy noodles, I would have ordered something else.

I accepted some type of replacement and daughter's Bacon Cheeseburger comes back with bacon now but NO cheese.

Manager stop by to ask how we were doing. Not well, I explained.

In the end, the problem was rectified by the manager giving us the total meal free and including free desserts for the group. The other benefit came later when my famous stand for noodle rights became a family legend.

Now I ask you, would an appetizer have made a difference in this situation?

is there a category for this

I have a question for my crack ninja team.  Oh that would be you, my readers.

Is there a category for this blog?

go look it up girl

Of course it would fall under (when I stop and think about common expressions like "fall under" I wonder where did that come from) personal blogs.  But there are so many types of personal blogs, photos, travel, cooking, music, stories, etc.

With exception of cooking you could find all the other subjects here at sometime.

This question is not very important at the moment but if I get asked for an interview by a major newspaper or TV talk show, it would be important then.

Oh wait, is delusional one of the categories?

Hodgepodge thing/game/meme/whatever

In my blog following I've often read this Wednesday Hodgepodge meme hosted by "From This Side of the Pond".  The first time I joined in and answered the set of questions was back in 2012 (here's the link if you are interested).

Now this whatever you want to call it (blog thing, game, meme?) certainly has staying power.  I've tried to get a game going on my blog a few times.  I just don't care for schedules much and so my attempts don't last long.

Also to be honest I often find the Hodgepodge list to be too gender specific (nice way of saying a chic-thing?)

1. Under what circumstances do you do your best thinking?
No question about it - the shower. On a few rare incidents I’ve figured out things while dreaming. All I can say is I had this work related problem when I went to sleep once and had an answer when I woke up (not the most exciting dream?)

2. Are you a risk taker? What's one big risk you've taken?

Yes, but not a big just-jump-don't-look one. I try to think first before taking the risk. I enjoy and have benefited from the stock market, so that's a big risk I've taken.  I'm surprised but some of the extreme sports people do today.

3. Some of the most common phobias according to the National Institute for Mental Health are-fear of spiders (arachnaphobia), snakes (ophidiophobia), heights (acrophobia), fear of spaces from which escape is difficult (agoraphobia), fear of thunder and lightening (astrophobia), fear of dogs (cynophobia), injections (trypanophobia), social situations, flying (pteromerhanophobia) and fear of germs and dirt (mysophobia). True phobias affect only about 10% of adults, but of those listed which would you rate as your greatest fear?

I don’t care for snakes much and find it strange that people have them as pets. I like a good thunderstorm - amazing display of nature’s power.

4. Are you settled or do you feel the need to move somewhere new?

I’m settled and maybe too settled.  I'm easily shaken.

5. What is something you find annoying when dining in a restaurant?

Too much background noise. Of course, there are many types of restaurants. I don’t like it when you need to shout over the music/game at some brewpubs/sportsbars to have a conversation.

6. Daffodil yellow, sunset orange, spring green, or sky blue...your favorite color this time of year?

Rainbows maybe after a thunderstorm.

7. If you were going to take a holiday all by yourself, where would you go?

Years ago I traveled to many places on my own for business. If the question implies no cost restrictions - the mediterranean or maybe South Africa.  However, there are a few places you could not pay me enough to go.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I find myself noticing word usage more and more. The words random and ton get misused often today. I believe language is a living changing thing so the different usage of words should be expected, however, I still notice it.

We interrupt this blog for

We interrupt this blog for a facebook question. I assume a few of you are on FB. I recall a few fellow bloggers avoid FB.  I understand.  I have a love-hate feeling about FB.  (BTW, I'm not and don't plan to be on twitter)

So if you are a face hooker or booker, I have a question. Did you notice this odd looking thing/creature show up on your feed recently?

Have you seen this?? It showed up at the top of my FB feed. It looks like it might just eat the feed. Is this a FB mascot?? Certainly a company that pays billions for other companies could pay for a better mascot.

don’t trip I need a trip

I’m just tripping out a little on meanings. I’ve been known to trip over my pronunciation of my list of tricky words. The combination and sequence of certain sounds overloads my speech processing and trips my internal circuit breakers. I probably just need a trip to a place with little paper umbrellas in the drinks.

“Stairway to Heaven” reminds us. “Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings.”

It also reminds us Led Zeppelin (or is it Lead Zeppelin) performed great guitar riffs.

During my brief research for this post (oh I’m sitting in my Institute for Better Postings chair) I learned that “trip” also has a nautical meaning. Living in the midwest and never being in the Navy I don’t get nautical much. How about you? Didn’t Olivia Newton-John have a hit song about getting nautical?

I found a site that offers learning guides for English titled “Free Language Stuff”. It has a section on multiple meanings. One of their guides gave me the idea for this problem sentence: My family always takes a trip on that rug.

Ohh it makes me wonder.

Oh yes the nautical trip meaning, Trip an Anchor - The act of breaking out the flukes of an anchor if they are caught on some obstruction.

Why do we have the multiple meanings? Do other languages have as many of these as English?

It won’t surprise you that I’m more familiar with linguini than linguistics. However, I often have a taste for linguistics. Digging under a layer or two of linguistic material reinforced the fact that I didn’t know much about the field. Did you know there is a theory of homonymic conflict? Best I can tell it has something to do with semantic change. Now is that the type of change I should support or the type that confuses the store clerk?

Tripping out on the Stairway To Heaven is better than tripping on it.

Ohh it really makes me wonder.

crazy question

A crazy idea crashed on my right brain coast (or is left brain thinking I always forget). It feels fresh and unexpected, like a squirt gun shot in the face on a hot day (summer will be here before you know it).

Would you enjoy doing a survey?

Not just any survey but a short Lisleman survey. I don’t particular like surveys either.

I will probably use the results for something important and grand, like planning my next expedition to the South Pole. We have an ozone hole down there that needs filling. Or maybe I’ll just have something to read while I eat my next peanut butter sandwich.

Don’t worry it is only 5 questions.

your mission

Don’t worry there’s no deadline on this and this post will not self destruct (would be cool to make one that did). Of course, we all face one very dead “dead line” someday after which a friend might write a nice memory of you. I’ll assume that “dead line” is many many years off for all of us.

I'm getting a little stuck on a subject.  The subject of aging still lingers in my mind after writing a few recent posts on the subject.

Oh yeah, your mission if you choose to accept it (queue up the Mission Impossible theme here) is to consider the following two expressions and ask another person about them.

angry old men

nice old ladies

I suspect most all of you have heard and perhaps used these two age related gender specific phrases. I would like to know your feeling of the matching gender one applying to yourself.  In other words, are you a member of that group Also, it would be interesting to get the opinion of another (more if you feel like polling) person in your life.

In case your inquiring mind wants to know. I hope I am not considered an angry old man but I don’t find the phrase to be completely non-applicable. I have my days occasionally.

a shot at hodgepodge

In my blog reading I've seen this Wednesday Hodgepodge meme hosted by "From This Side of the Pond".  Here's my first shot at it.

1. With that being said, I think I need to dive right into some Christmas related questions, don't you? Which do you prefer-pretty gift wrap with a bow or a pretty gift bag with/without a bow? What percentage of your holiday gifts are currently (as in right this very minute) wrapped in some form or fashion?
My wrapping is legendary.  Not for being neat and pretty but for the opposite.  If I could, I would wrap presents in newspaper.  I once put a present in a McDonalds bag (it was not greasy they gave me fresh one).  Maybe if I stop by MickeyD's tomorrow I'll have my first one wrapped.

2. What is one item on your Christmas list this year?
regular readers of A Few Clowns Short may remember me stating my dislike for lists.  I will say a Christmas list is better than most any other list.  But I don't really have one.  -  how about peace on earth - hey I'm in a beauty contest.
3. What makes a home?

a family
4. Motown founder Berry Gordy celebrates his birthday today...are you a fan of the Motown sound? If so who's your favorite Motown artist and/or song?
This is an easy one except it's hard to pick just one.  "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye. The movie "The Big Chill" used this song perfectly.
5. Red or green...which one is more prevalent in your closet?
My closet?  I'm lucky to get a closet but I don't know it's dark and dusty in there.

6. True or false-bacon makes it better? If you answered true, what's your favorite dish made with bacon?

What do you mean by "it"?  Bringing home the bacon is always good.  I have even tried the bacon sundae at Denny's (the restaurant not my Uncle Denny's)
7. Share a favorite holiday memory.
I have many little pieces of memories.  The silver Christmas tree, getting too hot in Church, the manger set-up on the piano, playing with my brother, etc.  The whole getting-up early to learn what Santa brought as kid was exciting.  Later with my own kids, watching their excited/surprised faces was joy.

8. Insert your own random thought here.
...it took by surprise I must say, when I found out yesterday... (sorry song stuck)  ...just about to lose my mind -

This is the best one in the hodgepodge list.  You can't get random wrong.

If I were to create the questions they would be much different.  For example if two trains are traveling toward each and train A is traveling 40 mph and .. oh forget it.

Don't you know I heard it through the grapevine.  ohhh

wednesday wanderings

The older I get the more likely my mind wanders instead of my body. Everyone can use a little of both types of wandering. Getting somewhere at the speed of thought sure beats the traffic jams.

Been there, done that - should that matter? Go for a repeat performance. Does anyone say, been there, shouldn’t have done that?

People ponder if the glass is half full or half empty. Who cares. Have a party, break the glass. Just don’t cut yourself.

No man is an island

Warning: The post you are about to read contains Lisleman opinion. Facts might be found to be fiction if they were actually fact-checked. The opinions presented are not fully thought through. Sometimes I sit on my ass too long and it shows.

But a guy is soon closing a deal to acquire almost a whole island.

I have questions.

I would like to know who owns the remaining two percent. Are they also in the one percent club? Doesn’t really matter because they are in a unique two percent club now. If I washed up on this island (I need to leave Illinois first so don’t be expecting me soon) would the two percent areas be clearly marked? Was this island a depressed real estate market? Where do they list islands for sale? Buying an island would have me very worried about global warming and rising sea level, are you? Were you influenced by the recent movie, “The Descendants”?

Just off the top of the old head guessing - The new landowner (island chief?) will be keeping a sailboat or two there. Please contact me if you need any assistance in watching your yachts. I have been thinking of a yacht watching career since I read this news.

I was fortunate enough to swim and snorkel across the water from your island. It looks nice from Maui. The Hawaiian chain of islands are nice neighbors to have.  Did your island come with nice waterfalls like Maui?

Oh one more thing. Here’s a cost saving tip for the new owner, Mr. Ellison. Don’t bother posting “do not trespass” signs on your 98% but instead provide “this is a 2% part” signs for the other owners and you will save on signs.

no caution needed

I’m not hot but I appreciate being handled with care.

McDonald's morning coffee prompted a question

(after making a few assumptions first)

At what age do you go from being hot and sexy to being cool and sweet?

In other words when does your description more likely include “sweet old man” or “such a sweet lady” than those more sultry words?

Sexy is mostly in our heads. A definite age for this transition doesn’t exist. George Clooney (turned 50 last year) might still rate a sexy in his description. What about Robert De Niro? Bob’s age is approaching 69 and he doesn’t look bad in this 2011 picture.

from wikipedia

So this is all very subjective but I bet we can all agree the following picture is NOT sexy (maybe sick?).

lisleman gets answer

Bloggers are very smart people. We know this because we are bloggers.

One of the blogs I follow covers science with a personal touch. The blogger works for NASA and I believe she gets an interesting inside view.  Not long ago, I asked a question in the comment section there. It must have been a good question (all questions are good) because she wrote a post about it.

Warning you might learn something about NASA’s space program. I did.
