breaker breaker what’s your 20

Blogging - will it become the next CB radio?

If you drove the US highways much in the 1970’s you probably had a CB radio or at least knew about them.  I remember borrowing one once for a road trip.

Similar to blogging, some people got deep into it and others just dabbled with it a bit.  CB radio even shared the broadcast feature of twitter but with a much more limited range.

I suspect twitter, Facebook, and Google+ has reduced and will keep reducing the blog traffic.  While thinking about this, I did a little searching of CB radio and found a long list of CB slang on wikipedia.

CB radio has more terms than blogging.  Here’s a few “good” ones:
  • "Zipper" –  painted dashed line dividing lanes
  • "Steak on the Grill" / "Put a steak on the grill" – to hit a cow.
  • "Seat Cover" – an attractive female passenger in a vehicle.
  • "How many candles are you burning?" – Asking how old someone is.
  • "Four Wheel Phone Booth" – Someone using a cell phone while driving.
  • "Alice in Wonderland" – Someone who is lost or seeking directions

Any of you using CB radio?

Alice in Wonderland just put a steak on the grill.

My brother used to be quite the CB guy. I thought it was the coolest thing!  You're right that twitter, FB, and the like are really pulling away from blogs.

My dad had one.  I would just get on it and ask the truckers if they saw any smokies.

This post made me think of my Uncle who recently passed away.  He was very into CB radio and he loved talking to his CB buddies.  His death still breaks my heart because he was such an amazing guy.  He adored me and always had nice things to say.  He thought the world of my kids.  RIP UncleB!

Quick story:  we used hand held CB walkie talkies on our move from San Diego to New England in 1997.  We took two cars, my husband driving our old Ford 350 truck, sons in the back seat and my close friend and I driving our SUV w/ the dog in the back.  My friend had been a DJ for years and he would talk to my husband in all these funny dialects, trucker talk and the like.  I like to sing (terribly) and I picked up the speaker and started singing in my opera voice.  We heard a voice come over the radio,

"What the hell was THAT?"

Those truckers did not know what they were listening to.

Having a niece write a nice tribute like this tells me he was a great guy.  All the best to you and your family.

I know they are still used but I wonder if they are used as much.

Yes the days before LOL - I just hoping blogs don't become the CB radio of the 00's.  thanks

I've never had a CB but I remember that it was a craze here in southern Africa at the time too ...
Hehehe I just love the slang ...

"how many candles is seat cover burning?" ...heh?

thanks for sharing - more blog learning - I didn't know the CB radio craze was big in South Africa.  That seat cover smells too fresh to me.

Nope.  The whole CB thing doesn't appeal to me.  I have found that FB has reduced my blogging time a bit, ut I still consider my blog to be primary.  FB is more for keeping up with friends and family.

No CB memories here but your post made me laugh (again). Thank you!

That's a good point.  In the beginning blogs did more of the close friends and family connection function.  Certainly FB and G+ do a better job of that type of connection.  But as you said, more FB or whatever will use up more online time.
thanks

No CB radio, for me!

I still prefer blogs to the new-fangled social media stuff. FB is great for keeping in touch with friends and family, but I don't think it's an adequate replacement for a good old-fashioned blog.

CB radio, why yes I have forgotten how popular it was and I guess blogging will go the same way. Who cares. I hate Twitter and dont do Facebook. I tried Twitter and think its ridiculous. But then I am old and not cool so there you go. I will stick with blogging whether I have one reader or two. Its allows me to unwind and better than a therapist.
