do we get too idealistic

Does the world set us up for idealistic holidays?

often its hard to talk about it

While I was writing this post my inbox was hit with this from Pinterest:
Looking for places to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Whisk away to these romantic destinations and spend your weekend with someone special.

What if the only whisking away going on is chasing dust bunnies around the house?

It doesn't mean you'll have a terrible V-day.  Yeah, I understand companies are just promoting their goods and playing mind games with us.  If you were not reminded it was V-day would it have been a great day?

I've never seen these two together before

The mind games, especially now with social media creates unrealizable expectations which can lead to disappointment and money wasted.

Holiday pressure for most, I think, refers to the big year end holiday season. I’ve never felt pressured to find the perfect place to drink the perfect beer on St. Patrick’s Day. While there are a few great beers for my taste buds, the drinking place doesn’t matter too much. The company joining you for the celebration makes the bigger difference. My point here (it would dull reading without a point - right?) is not to let some marketing department full of clowns short of a circus, pressure you for any holiday.

it taste the same with or without the foam shamrocks

However if you would like to buy me a beer for V-day, please let me know.

The last time we went out to dinner on Valentines Day was when I was pregnant and the wait was so long even with reservations. I was like Linda Blair on Exorcist and vowed we would prepare our own nice meal at home. All the hype is just too much for one day! Hope you get your beer!

I guess, we are totally devoid of romanticism. We rarely go out to restaurants on holidays because they tend to be crowded. My idea of a wonderful evening is staying home, fixing a nice meal and maybe watching a movie. We are so dull.

I agree with on the wonderful evening idea. What I disagree about and is the point I'm trying to make is you calling that idea dull. The marketing machines have convinced many of us that it is dull. Yeah we new shooting rainbows and dancing unicorns as great background music plays. Dull should not be defined by these companies or social media.
thanks

thanks - I agree about the crazy hype being pushed at us.

The media can't sway me; I no long even look like the people in the ads. Even the beer drinking ads. I wonder if it ever did.

I probably look at them but I don't compare myself to them. thanks

It's not a good day to go out - last time I did, we couldn't get a reservation until 9:45!

We've both always been happy with heart-shaped boxes full of our favorite candy. I'm always amazed at the marketing for V-Day, but have never known anyone who ever traveled to a romantic destination to celebrate it.

Yes overcrowded restaurants is a typical problem but I think the business like that over little traffic. You should be able to make any day V-day. thanks

I can't think of anyone at the moment but traveling to a warm location especially this winter is attractive in February. Amazed or disgusted over marketing? I probably lend more to the disgusted.
all the best. thanks

My mailbox is flooded with romantic cruise specials and Hawaiian vacation deals too...

some marketer probably has you in the travel often group. I don't see myself ever taking a cruise. The port visits appear to be too rushed. thanks

Yeah that is a strange combo. I guess if they are just dancing it's not a big problem. thanks

We actually do have reservations this year. And will I accept flowers, jewelry or offers of gin and tonics? I will -- but I don't expect them. :-)

thanks for stopping by an sharing a comment. With this weather I hope you get a warm table with those reservations.
Not expecting gifts is the best way to go.
thanks

Exactly!! Spending a mint is not the point of these things; it's all about the people you spend it with. I was sort of hoping with all the blogging about being frugal that it was beginning to resonate with folks...guess not?? Going out on some of these holidays is more stress than it's worth anyway. I don't want to spend a night with hubby sitting/standing in some restaurant entry way waiting for someone to clear out a table.

You point out a an interesting situation, waiting in a crowded restaurant entry way. The ones that offer those pagers help the situation but the wait if extreme can ruin the evening.
thanks
