Well I know it’s kinda late

Let’s time travel back to the seventies, and grab a piece of memory.

An odd thing happened as I started to create this post. I was going to run with this crazy idea of updating a Jim Croce song with modern social media terms. As I researched a little background on Jim Croce and the song “I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song” I realized his story is more interesting than my silly updating of his hit song.

Really, changing the lyrics to “I’ll have to say I love you in a tweet” is not that creative.

Anyone remember the late great Jim Croce?

downloaded from Ingrid Croce website

Like many my age I enjoyed his hit songs back in the 70’s. Jim died in plane crash much too early in life. He was only 30 and left his wife, Ingrid, and a son who was a week away from his second birthday.

What I found was an amazing story of a widowed single mother conquering hardship. Ingrid did eventually remarry. She and her husband co-wrote a biography of Jim, titled “I Got a Name”. It was published in 2012. I have not read the book but now I’m interested.

From the wikipedia pages and online interviews I learned that Ingrid continued to sing, opened and ran a successful restaurant in San Diego, wrote cookbooks and won numerous awards. She has a website with information about her story, restaurant and books. Ingrid Croce

On her website I found the introduction of the book “I Got a Name”. In it she wrote:

“We were both intense individuals. When it was good, it was magnificent, passionate, and soulful. But when we hurt each other, when our friendship and trust were challenged, it was horrific, painful, and empty.”

I remember Jim Croce. I didn't realize his wife sang and I didn't know much about his life. Interesting, thanks for sharing.

Like you, I loved his music, but didn't know much about his personal life. She was, and is, a survivor. Thanks for sharing and the beautiful walk down memory lane with his music.

I do not remember hearing about the plane crash, but then again I was a young girl. I do, however, remember the song. I enjoyed the YouTube video. Do you know what happened to his son?

Adrian had a tough childhood having suffered a brain tumor. He is now married with kids. He has released 7 albums and writes his own songs. I have not listened to his songs yet. Here's the wiki page on him

He was born in a town about 45 minutes from my house.

Interesting - does the town recognize him with a street, park name? Maybe a plaque.

I am a big Croce fan. I did a post quite awhile ago about "love songs" and included "I Have to Say I Love You In a Song". I had been reading Ingrid's book "Thyme In A Bottle" one of her cookbook type of books...and she told the story of why Jim wrote the song. They had a fight about their finances and he wasn't good at communicating when they had disagreements she said. He wrote it during the night and sang it to her the next morning.

I think his loves songs were amazing, especially given the fact he died so young.

I read that Ingrid did a few cookbooks. I found the 2012 book "I got a name" at the library and started reading it. thanks
