I talked about the Pope once

Now I eat bacon during Lent. (I don’t think bacon is related to the devil and a fish is not going to get me to heaven.)

Pearly Gate News - Lisleman declared incompetent papacy reporter. However, it’s rumored he is working on Pope jokes.

don't think this is in Italy but a few vestments would help

What’s sorta cool about this new pope thing. (ah, you didn’t hear? What, you have your head up a reality TV show? Turn off Honey Boo Boo and listen to a little news.)

Anyway let’s not get serious.

In a world  One man  They came for

Oh forget it. It’s probably only dramatic for a few people who are praying right now and not reading my blog. But it is interesting.

Here’s why.

We get to relearn or learn first time for many, the traditions of the Roman Catholic church which seem so odd in our modern world.

For example, even though the last Pope created a twitter account the news of the papal selection will come by means of smoke signals instead of twitter.

What I didn’t know was that the Sistine Chapel does not have a chimney for smoke signalling. Luckily that was noticed and Vatican workers installed a chimney yesterday.

Oh pray to God, they have the whole process covered. If the Sacred College of Cardinals finishes during the night they have spotlights shining on the chimney.

This is not Cardinals gone wild. They are “locked in” until they reach a two-thirds majority. While in lock down mode they stay at the a Vatican hotel, Casa Santa Marta (built 1996), for the duration and, in line with tradition, drew lots for their rooms.

White smoke and a ring.

The white smoke is the sign it’s over. A new gold ring is cast unique for each pope. The Ring of the Fisherman is slipped on the pope’s finger at his papal inauguration. This is not to be confused with the Lord of the Rings.

OMG - almost forgot to list my news source - CNN.

My church served chicken for dinner before our ecumenical Ash Wednesday service, so I guess we don't abide by the meat thing. :-)

I find it interesting only because it's so rare. We visited the Vatican and it is an amazing sight Catholic or not. Love your David picture......cracks me up as usual...have a great Sunday!

That is a great line about the church using white smoke instead of Twitter to announce the new pope. I didn't realize that the cardinals had meetings to decide when to start the conclave instead of "as long as we are all here let's just decide on the new pope." As you can tell, I am not Roman Catholic but I wish them the best.

Honestly I've gotten so lax in this area I've forgotten the details for Ash Wednesday. I just remember Fridays were no meat but Easter was a gluttonous meal. Personally I don't think food and religion should mix.

thanks have a great Sunday too.

thanks I could be that first meetings are more like primaries. I don't know. I didn't know each pope got a new unique ring. Do you think I should do more pope posts?

I wonder if those hands ever suffered even a paper cut.

It's not the hardest physical labor job is it? Most leadership jobs don't require much muscle except for the jaw. I hope the next one has a top notch brain to think out social problems. thanks

I used to be so strict about my Lenten practices that on Fridays I only fed my cats fish flavors. Now...not so much.

lisleman said...

I have not heard that the rules applied to pets. Cats love fish right? Now dogs might be turned off. thanks for sharing.

I'm actually familiar with Catholic tradition. But the whole pope thing - an infallible human - strikes me as silly.

you probably can read between the lines on this post that I'm not too serious regarding the papacy either. thanks

I'm a Catholic convert who grew up Baptist, and I actually love the history and tradition of it all, and how so much of it doesn't change with the times. I had a lot of misconceptions about it...and discovered along the way that there are a lot of Catholics who don't really know a lot about Catholicism.

Since you converted as an adult you probably do know more. Learning it as a kid is different. Also there is the influence of your parents interpretation. We could have an interesting discussion on this. thanks

Sorry for the slow response, I managed to get the flu and be sick for two days. I love that your post was informative without preaching a denominational viewpoint. I am super open to all religions but I rarely comment when someone posts specific beliefs as that gets tricky not to offend. I think you post was interesting and would be glad for you to share your perspective on the naming of the new pope, I find the Roman Catholic traditions very interesting.

Hope you are feeling better. I thought flu season was over. Why are you doing this off-season? Better prices on flu medicine?
New pope name - I suggest Pope Lisleman but Pope Popeman would be good too.

I'm oddly fascinated with the whole Pope election process. It was on TV this morning while I worked from laptop, and I couldn't tear myself away. Religion is so interesting, in terms of the structure and ties to tradition. I enjoy the pageantry and the costumes and the process. I didn't know about the gold ring, though, that was brand new information!

I just always think it's interesting that they pick from the oldest of the old to lead the church into the future. It seems kind of backwards to me, but I guess that's why I'm no longer catholic.

The traditions are interesting but this isn't royalty being crowned/married. It's a religion. In the long run they would do better to focus on serving mankind and skip a bit of the pageantry (IMHO).
