Do you give good comments?

Sometimes I think my comments are just marvelous. I had a post the other day and really think my reply comment (replies count as comments over here) was better than the post.

"Well youngster let me tell you about the rock and roll underground. Ever hear of FM? Why I remember dark nights staying up late trying to tune-in an underground FM station. We had to turn knobs back then no fancy push button radios. A good FM station would play whole album sides NON-stop. What you don't even own a radio anymore?
Well drop my roach and burn the shag carpet!
You need some rock and roll education."

I didn’t get a response to the reply. Sometimes I do.

I’m not egotist. But some of my comments are.

Just today I found myself writing a comment on a photo blog like I knew what the hell I’m talking about. I think the internet can be a little dangerous that way. You can easily come across as something that you are not.

I’m not saying bloggers are con men. They are not because most of the bloggers I know are women. People do have wisdom but it’s often drowned out by their own flood of opinion. You know what they say about opinions. You don’t want to see those all the time.

I’m not real sure if there is even a point to this post. Maybe I’m just saying lighten-up go ahead comment but don’t take it so seriously. I’m not.

Do you ever wonder what would happen if people talked to each other at a party like they comment online? I don’t but if you do let me know.

I'm aware of that photoblog comment! ;-)

Actually, I haven't received any hoity-toity comments on my blog (other than from a certain commenter - just kidding!) I guess it depends the type of blog it is and the subject matter. I'd love to have a party with my commenters!

I sometimes leave super awesome comments. And then sometimes, they are lame, like Mario Lopez.

I guess I need to be more hoity in my commenting.

I tend to ignore boorish comments and the people who hand them out. I wish people were kinder, is all.

I don't know if I make any stellar comments (that would be for the blog author to decide, I suppose), but I've gotten some great ones. I've gotten a few weird ones, too. I once mentioned something about my bathroom (cleaning it, I think) on my blog and got a comment from a guy selling some personal hygiene system. He showed up again when I mentioned toilet paper rolls getting smaller but costing more. I swear, say the words bathroom or toilet and this guy shows up. I apologize in advance if he shows up here now that I've said that.

Your last paragraph has me stumped. Is it a bad thing? I think that I do talk at parties like I do online. I talk a little too much and I am usually barely on topic LOL and I laugh out loud a lot :)

Party? You are inviting us to a party? Thanks for calling me out on that comment. It's fun to get a reaction.

lisleman said...

we all have ups and downs. Just leave your super ones here. thanks

Maybe I've been lucky or clueless but other than the rare spam type, all the comments on this blog have been very respectful. thanks

lisleman said...

I'll be sure to redirect him to you. That's a slightly weird story. I did a post about a toilet before (it's a part of daily life) but I guess this weird salesman missed me.
thanks

I'm stumped too and I wrote it. Blog comments are typically short and the commenter moves on to another blog. They don't often go back and forth. I really like the ones that do become a conversation thread but I don't expect it. So following the typical comment style the party would be strange if everyone said just a few words and moved on to the next person and said a word or two, and move on again.

OK, now I understand. The type of party you're talking about is sort of like a speed dating event. haha!

I've LOL at your comments at other people's blog, never at mine though. I think I give good comments, sometimes. And hey is that Erik Estrada I'm looking at!?

TechnoBabe said...

In my humble opinion, I think the comments are more real. People in real life don't speak as openly, at least not people I have been around.

lisleman said...

Erik Estrada with gray hair maybe. I had to look up his age. He's older than me. I have never seen him with gray hair. You are saying my comments at your blog are not as good as my comments on other blogs. My comments vary day to day, blog to blog. Depending on what pops in my head and the subject of the post my comment may or may not be funny. Do you think your blog is more serious than not serious?
thanks for this comment - all the best

You make a good point but I bet you could get a debate going on that idea. Some people do open up more if they feel anonymous to who they are talking to. I've seen it all the time on airplanes, bus stops, check-out lines. Maybe the blogs offer that too. thanks for the interesting idea.

I am saying my blog is not as funny as others. That's what I'm saying.

I had a bad long crush on Estrada when I was about 8 to 14. Maybe it is not over yet.

I would never say anything in a comment that wouldn't say directly to the person if they were standing in front of me.

lisleman said...

oh but don't forget that when you are standing in front of that person you have the tone of voice and look in your eyes to help communicate the message. thanks for sharing even if I can't see the look in your eyes.

lisleman said...

Maybe most of your readers like your blog more serious or thought provoking than funny. So did you watch CHIPS when you were young?

I wonder if the person even saw your reply comment? If I'm not notified by email of a reply, I rarely see it - it's hit or miss if I drop back by to see if you did.

lisleman said...

The DISQUS system should send you an email with the reply. You should get this message in an email. I understand the problem with checking for a reply. It just takes up time, but sometimes if I go to a new post I'll check the older post to see if I got a reply.
thanks

I too come from the school of thought where if you read someone's blog, you leave a comment on it. I also come from the same school that says that if someone comments on your blog, that you comment back to them by email, or if it is a discussion, put it on your blog and let them know you did that.

Also, it I am taking part in a blog hop and someone comments on my post, I make sure I read their post...and leave a comment.

I believe it is common courtesy and I also read that it is strengthening your readership if you comment to your readers personally.

Great post!

Emily said...

Oh, yeah, and I also try to make my comments as good as I can as well, showing the blogger that I have read their post well. I can nearly always make a connection.

Besides common courtesy, it is again a good policy to comment on other people's blogs if you want more readers for yours!

Hope no one here finds me too "Emily Post-ish"!

lisleman said...

Yes that's a good policy but does take time especially if you try to make your comments thoughtful and focused. I have heard about bloggers giving blogging because they feel pressure/stress from doing this. So IMHO - it's a good goal but not worth stressing over.
thanks for both comments here.

Sometimes I give good comment ... other times I don't. I guess that is just how it goes!

I try to base my comment on the nature of the post. Sometimes it's a short reply, and other times it's something more in depth. It all depends. And as you said, a lot of opinion mixed in.

I try to leave good comments that relate to the post. I do not comment on every single blog I read though because it is just too time-consuming. I know I like receiving interesting comments on my blogs, so try to do the same for others. Stopping by from Saturday Samplings.

lisleman said...

Unless it is rude or mean, every comment is good. But you are right some are better than others and it probably depends on what's going on in your head at the moment. thanks

lisleman said...

Thanks for sharing. I've clicked on a few posts (not very often) that I just didn't either get or mentally connect with. Those post might not get a comment from me or it would be a short simple type of one. But I have found case where the comments are better than the post. I even have my own example --

Thanks for stopping by and taking time to share a comment. Two obstacles to comments - time and understanding the blogger's reason for the post.
thanks
