As someone who recently lost a really good pet (after losing a really good job - great year, so far, eh?), cloning has a certain appeal - although not at those prices. Of course, probably most of what makes for a good pet is the personality, which may be more a result of environment and learning than inheritance. Not that I really wanted to get into the nature/nuture issue, but it could be something to discuss.
I didn't even think of that discussion (nature/nurture) but starting a discussion on most anything is open for me.
First off, I'm sorry to hear you lost a pet (something other than a goldfish probably). We had to put down our dog Marley last year. I'll probably find plenty of disagreement out there, but I think the health care options for pets get to be ridiculous very quickly. My wife complained that I put a price on the dog's head. I think pets can teach kids good lessons about life (death), some of which are not that pleasant.
So the nature/nurture question - I go the "both" answer. But I think the nurture is slightly more important.
Ours was a dog, too, a schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle mix). I got her for my wife 13 years ago, at a time when I didn't even care that much for dogs (I still had a cat from my bachelor days). This turned out to be an unusually good dog, though, and she changed my opinion.
We may have gone to the other extreme with the vet work. I'd be embarrassed to admit how much money we spent keeping her alive for maybe an extra nine or ten months, but she finally couldn't be saved.
I'd have to agree with you about nuture probably being the dominant factor. A genetically identical dog (twin or clone) raised in a different environment would probably have a very different personality. And you can't perfectly recreate the environment, so that's largely what makes pets - and people - unique.
Not that this has anything to do with the original subject of this blog.
mmm - original subject of blog - airfone - was it nurtured enough? can it be cloned? doesn't look like a clone is wanted.
sometimes things relate that don't appear obvious.
