an old young man

Robin Williams is quoted as saying, “if you can remember the sixties, you weren’t there.”

Now that I’ve been promoted officially into my sixties (phone calls, texts, songs, gifts, and cards to prove it), I hope I will remember mine. I want to be there for the whole set of my sixties (what? he was referring to a different sixties?).

I woke up with the realization that I gained one more year. Is it lost or gained a year? If you lived it then consider it a gain. As the years accumulate I’m sadly reminded of travelers I’ve encountered who had their accounts closed out much early. Your journey’s end can be shocking surprise.

I don’t see it as living on borrowed time because I don’t know anyone I could borrow time from, nor have the wealth to borrow it. No it’s a non-taxable free gift. (earlier thoughts on turning six again)

Sixties? Yeah I remember some of it. Really it’s the coming-of-age thing you remember. The end of sixties and beginning of the seventies was that period on my timeline.

Bell bottomed pants, paisley shirts, nehru jackets (the Beatles had a big influence) were pieces of my past. You didn’t need to be at the “happening” to know about it. Back then you read about it in a magazine or learned about it in a song (no youtube clips of it).

Each of us are our own happening.

Hey life, look at me
I can see the reality
'Cause when you shook me, took me, outta my world I woke up
Suddenly I just woke up to the happening

I remember a lot about the sixties. I graduated high school in 1970 so my high school memories would all be in that decade. I must of lived a very different life that Robin Williams. As I have just crossed over to my 6th decade, I am hopeful that my ability to recall stays in play for awhile.

I remember being a small town girl on a big, liberal campus, and my head swam bit, acclimating. The building at the corner of one of the campus streets had a large awning with its address: 1961. Sometimes I wondered if that was for the year, and would I ever figure it out.

Interesting thought about that address. thanks
