down the river a bit

On Memorial Day the better half and I took a short trip to Starved Rock state park.  It's on the Illinois river.

We parked down by the river and then when up

If you plan to hike there, you will be going up and down

There are many creatures carved from tree trunks on display

There is a beautiful old lodge that reminds me of places out west.

More trail shots

I don't know who she is but her dad was nice to let me take her picture.  She reminded both my wife and I of our youngest daughter at that age.

I'm a regular visitor of Unknown Mami's SIMC photo collection.  You should check her photo links (click the box).

Great post Bill - I especially like the wood carvings - are they done by professionals who go around carving trees?

I don't know.  Some of them have been there many years but I don't know if it was one artist or many different ones.  Carving gives the tree a new life.  thanks

On every visit (a few years ago we often went twice a year) we would say we should stay at the Lodge.  Have not done that yet.  You know how when you are close to your house it doesn't seem reasonable to spend money staying overnight in a different place.
thanks

Yes and we can envision our daughter doing the same thing at that age.
thanks

Starved Rock? Interesting name.

Did you have lunch there?

I hope there are state parks for a long time. Nice photos, thanks for showing us.

The name comes from its history.  I don't remember the details of the story.  My understanding is one Indian tribe starved out another Indian tribe on the tall rock.  Yes we did enjoy a small lunch on the patio looking over all the greenery. thanks

The trails look similar to the ones in Ricket Glen, PA.  I'm sure there are many other beautiful similar sights too.

Never been there.  Is that in the Poconos?  This area is made up of sandstone which has been carved by centuries of water.
thanks

. I live near Philly. So the poconos is about 1 1/2-2 hours north. Rickets glen is about 3 hours west.
