digital daily life whatever

(from “soak up the sun”)
“....I don't have digital
I don't have diddly squat
It's not having what you want
It's wanting what you've got....”
(thanks Sheryl Crow)

I don’t have a smartphone. Really, I don’t want one, at least for now. My sister (any family reading this could probably figure out which sister but my family doesn’t typically read the blog anyway) has a droid. She knows how to take pictures and text. I also found out once driving around Chicago that she knew how to turn on the navigation app but not much more. In the end, we called (you know those old fashion talking exchanges) the restaurant.

Texting is a great option but since I don’t have a full keyboard, my texting speed is very slow. If it’s going to be more than one or two texts, please just call. Voice is better than text.

I don’t have a smartphone. (in the rare event that my sister reads this I want to emphasize that point) Pictures are too tiny on my flip-phone. I think she forgets. She’s busy. She sends me almost all of the pictures I ever get on my phone. I wish she would learn to email them instead. I’m planning to alert her kids to this post so maybe they could teach her the email option. Now I’m wondering if she ever uses the email app on her smartphone. I’m guessing she doesn’t.

Hey readers who are older than 20 - remember film cameras? I have not used a film camera since the last century. But I remember living in the last century. You should too, it was only 10 or so years ago. Most everyone didn’t bother taking film based pictures that were frivolous because each picture was going to add to your developing cost. Unless you have a tiny memory card with no room, that extra picture today is only going to take a minuscule part of your battery’s charge. Our digital daily life is different from when it was just a daily life.

My sister sent me a picture the other day while I was walking through the woods which is a very low tech place. Logs but no log-ins or log-outs. I am 100% positive that if digital cameras and smartphones had not work their way into our daily life, I would have never ever seen the following picture.

Nice of her to think of me while she was looking in her fridge.  Maybe the beer in that bottom drawer made her think of me.

Now she did send some nice pictures from her recent trip to my email account, but it was from her husband’s smartphone.

I don’t have a smartphone.  Until I transferred the picture (my phone has bluetooth) to the computer I didn’t know she had beer in the fridge.  Mental note to self - tell sister I like Sam Adams much better than Bud Light.  Is there an app for that???

I have a Smartphone. But I hardly ever use apps. I use my email and Internet and texting a lot, but that's about it.

but have you ever sent a picture of your fridge with it?

Oh yes, I remember the film cameras. I finally got my first digital camera in late 2004 and haven't used a film camera since. I have a smart phone, but I rarely use the gadgets on it. I use it mostly for what it was intended, a phone. Occasionally I text, and I'll also use the calendar to plug in reminders.

my flip-phone (I like the smaller size) has a calendar in it. I have used it for reminders but I must say the calendar is tiny and difficult to read any events that are on it.

Does your sister ever eat at home? Our frig is piled high. This looks like they just moved in or they travel and are never home.

My son thinks I'm so outdated because I don't text. It's not that I don't know how (although I don't), it's because texting costs extra on our plan and I don't want to pay for it. I also don't take many pics with my phone because they seem to mysteriously disappear.

Yes, I remember cameras with film! I still have about 20 rolls of film sitting around my house waiting to be developed. I wonder if the pictures would even turn out?

Thanks for giving me a shoutout on Mrs. 4444! I appreciate it!

you are welcome, that was a good post you did.
Yes you should not let the film sit around. My wife took some film pictures to use up old film. The colors did not come through very well. Even though the scene was a beach the colors were not bright. I think the film was too old.

Do you remember flash cubes? I recently saw pictures of flash cubes on someone's blog and it brought back memories.

I like my phones to work, ie. talk to people, so no smart phone and dropped calls for me

lisleman said...

yes I do. I remember the cubes and the long ones (stick type) that had about half a dozen. The older bulb type that my parents used would melt after they flashed which I thought was cool.
thanks for sharing and reminding of those fun things.

oh but if you get one maybe I could get my sister to send you updated pics of her fridge.

that's a great idea I might just do that.

You're a couple up on me - I can't even get photos on my phone - people send them to me all the time, so I guess I'm going to have to figure out how. However, I would love to have a smart phone! I just don't know if I'd have time to learn how to use it!

Well so far I don't feel the need for the smarts of the smartphone. There are some internet activities like FB, blogs, and various location games like foursquare but I just don't see doing that when I'm away from the computer.
I have used the laptop at coffee shops and McDonalds so the laptop is mobile enough for me. Anybody reading this use the coupon thing on their smartphone?

I dragged my heels on the Smartphone thing for a long time. Before that, I dragged on getting a cell phone at all. I'd been saddled with one as a social worker and it rang at all times of the day and night. I needed time to heal from some of those phone calls before I went cellular again. In time, I slowly started to rely on that phone more and more. This past May, I took the plunge and went Smart. Verizon, Motorola, Android. Got an awesome deal because I bought the outgoing model before the brand spanking new versions were released. And now... I love it. I can check and respond to e-mail at any time. I feel more connected thanks to my apps. I have ways of entertaining myself and my kids in a pinch. I stay caught up on news.

And I have taken a lot of weird and random pics with it. And I often share them on my blog!

Oh- and we still sometimes use a new-fangled version of film cameras. The kids love to be handed a disposable camera when we head out for a special day! I was very excited when I received my first 35mm film camera that was all my own. I have oodles of horrid pics from the days- blurry, heads chopped off, accidental shutter depression, etc.

I have a droid...I'm so not smart enough for my droid. my droid sucks ass! correction, my droid sucks the battery so bad that it can't go 4 hours without a charge. and that is if I don't use it. if i try to use the phone, send text, and read my emails its dead in a tad over an hour. and the virtual keyboard SUCKS!!! boy I'm cranky...

another advantage to a flip-phone - better battery life

lisleman said...

that's a good idea - they don't mind waiting for the picture to be developed?
When I first went digital with the camera, I was pretty good about getting prints. I must admit I'm not so good at getting prints anymore. I do backup the computer.

I have an iPhone and I love it. Not all the apps, but for on-the-go internet access. And I alos like that it has a pedometer and iPod for my walks. And oh, yeah, I remember film cameras. Don't mis them AT ALL! The cost of photography has plummeted with digital.

lisleman said...

but have sent anyone a strange picture like this one? Oh do they have an app for secret agents?

what about sending her a photo of your kitchen junk drawer or your bathroom vanity cabinet!
