Fly like the Jetsons

Back before my face was on an electronic virtual book, back when a single computer would fill large rooms and were fed by paper cards -
back long ago -
I thought this would happen someday.

Flying cars  --  cool

A favorite cartoon of mine was the Jetsons. The ordinary family of the future (Jetsons) had a flying car and robot, so that could be my future.   I was ordinary but not a cartoon.

Did you watch the Jetsons?  Did you think a flying car and robot servant might be possible when you grew up?

I didn't research when this idea was first tried, but I took a picture of an early attempt on display at a museum in Seattle.  From the looks of the flying car, I'm thinking the sixties.

Actually we are not quite there yet. The company, Terrafugia, is taking orders but the first ones don't roll off production until late 2011. Also, the price is slightly above an ordinary family's reach - $194,000.

But the Jetsons were there in the sixties.

No security lines and no checked baggage fee - Priceless!

Yeah, I think I will have to pass.

hey do you read comments on blogs other than your own? I do. Especially when it's from a blogger I know. So I have this idea or little experiment. Lilly hasn't posted anything in sometime. Last winter (summer for the Aussie) her blog took a nosedive into oblivion. I'm not sure if it's just another break but I enjoyed harassing her into posting last time so maybe this will work again.

(do you read LONG comments? good)
Instructions - go over to the her last post (of now anyway)
http://www.lillyslife.com/2010/05/this-is-what-i-call-aging-gracefully.html

And leave a comment - better yet leave a comment that follows the song title game I started there. thanks

I was just finishing my long comment while you stopped by.
Pass - too pricey or too scary - both?

I did like the Jetsons, first of all because it was about family and secondly they were so mod at that time. For me personally, I am not into flying much anymore. I used to fly for work and vacations often but my little life these days is quite enough of everything I really want in my life. It will be interesting to see how much business Terrafugia ends up getting.

You think about flying in a car. I think about all the jerks who can't drive on roads yet expect to not get in someone elses flight pattern in the sky.

given the unusual niche target market, I think any sales would be great for them. From the little I read on their site they are solving the problem of having a car when you fly your private plane somewhere. I would NOT drive this in Chicago.

Hi boss, can't access by either Disqus OR yahoo!

Hazel/Dave - wow are you having an identity problem today?
Your comment showed up OK in the DISQUS comments. Maybe it was delayed. I like their system but it gets slow for me at times. But I was having the whole web get slow a few minutes ago.
My face - virtual book -- I'm referring to facebook.

I loved the Jetsons!

I didn't care about flying cars, but I was sure I would have a jet pack by now.

Yes - During my 60's childhood I believed the millennium would see us in flying cars and being tended to by robots. We were robbed!

Thanks for the heads up about Lilly's blog. I thought she quit blogging! I've missed her sense of humor.

thanks - I see your comment is showing on her blog. So since hers is set-up for comment moderation I assume she read the comment and approved it.
I asked her to comment on the comment - we'll see.

I was a huge Jetsons fan to. But I wanted a "Rosie" robot housekeeper. I loved that idea!

Hope your July 4th weekend is a good one.

I think the design of the new flying cars look cool. I wonder how do they take off, I mean what kind of runway is required. I'll google for video.

I grew up watching The Jetsons.

I included a link to the company. Maybe you should request a boat version. Of course, there has been sea planes for many years. I don't imagine you could take off in any metropolitan area. You would need a flat rural road.

Oh yes, I was a loyal Jetsons watcher. And I always thought that some day we would have the stuff they thought of in that show. But can you imagine the laws we would need to have for flying cars. Drunk flying, where do you take off and land, crash investigations, and do the police have flying cars too? "Headquarters, I'm in pursuit of a red Buick that just went through a stop sign, isn't pulling over.....okay, we're in the air now. Notify the air force for back up".

lisleman said...

that's a good point. There are flying rules and laws but the system is not setup for a Jetsons type of world. Drunk flying - hmm I recall some news on that before. People unknowingly paying to be flown by drunk pilots.

He he I just read your comment on this. I havent blogger proerpy for nine months or so. I am trying to get back into it. dont take a break from blogging is my advice, otherwise you might never get back into it. And the Jetsons, clever, clever, clever. Love them still to this day.

thanks for the multiple comments. It's nice when you leave a comment trail as you browse through the blog.
So it's not like riding a bike? Can't you just get back on and go? Maybe it's more like washing dishes. You always remember how but lose the motivation to do them.
