more than an over-night

Are you wondering (I did) how he was able to pull off this fun experiment? Oh if you didn't watch the clip yet go back and watch I'll wait.

I found this clip on a blog by a flight attendant called the Flying Pinto.

The story behind the clip is even more interesting than the clip. He was able to film this because he has been sleeping on planes over night. Actually he is living on the planes for 30 days. A really crazy stunt.

Those readers that know me (why don't you ever comment?) know that I've been involved with airlines and aircraft during my engineering career. Overall the airline projects were exciting. Of course some of the travel was not always fun.

I had the opportunity to be involved in some interesting wi-fi testing with aircraft. One time our team tested overnight at O'hare. Even O'hare gets quiet in the wee hours of the night. Most ground tests and installation of new equipment is performed overnight because the airline want the aircraft flying and generating revenue in the day.

Here's a shot of the cockpit during a wi-fi test on a 747. That time the testing was during the day because the aircraft was in for maintenance.

I and probably most others, don't want to sleep on a plane. I have lucked-out on a few occasions been upgraded to biz class and I still can't sleep well on a plane.

So this guy's stunt is amazing to me. Basically for 30 days he's been flying and transferring between planes while never leaving the airport. I would rather sleep in the terminal than on the plane. Well maybe a nice first class bed type of seat on a big jumbo would be better. That's not an option for this gig because AirTran only has Boeing 717's and 737's.

I gathered from the web site for this 30 day stunt that GOGO, the inflight wi-fi service, is sponsoring part of the stunt.

You can find out more at the site.

@myundiary - thanks for stopping by - actually I or some others I know would probably be available since the layoffs.
I suspect his flights and maybe meals were picked up but I wonder if he is making any money for it.
Maybe he'll write a book ???

lol...I know! As a Flight Attendant, 30 days on an airplane would be my worst nightmare! Mark says he had a fear of flying he wanted to overcome...I think it worked for him. He also live in IKEA for a week, that I could probably handle: )

Thanks for the mention...I'm going to peruse your blog;-)That's pretty cool that you are testing the wifi...I can't wait until my airline gets it!!!

@pinto well I hope you find some other interesting stuff here. I think after about 6 hours or so on plane your clothes start to smell like the plane.

My top wish for planes is space.

1) For the first time, perhaps EVER, I'm glad my butt is so big.

2) I'm pretty fascinated with airplane wi-fi. Any chance you'd do a blog (or have done a blog) where you explain, in terms a moron, I mean layman, can understand?

Wow! I guess that baby would suck down just about anything!

@lauren the writer - the simple can be the best.

@alantru - part of the mystery solved but what about 'where does the waste go?'

@jeanne - well I think it's better to get off before pushing that button. Are you serious about reading about wi-fi on aircraft details? I figure most readers would skip a post like that.

@yorksnbeans - I guess some aircraft maintenance people could answer that one. I do wonder why it is so powerful.

I've never been on a plane, but I wanted to be a flight attendant when I was younger. Ironic, huh? Well I enjoyed this video, very interesting experiment!

Bill Lisleman said...

@imee - well that's ironic - if you check the links in the post you'll find this guy had a fear of flying too.

Oaky, that is hysterical. Who thinks up such a thing?

I don't know how I missed this at Flying Pinto (I'm a big fan of hers!) THANKs for sharing. It's not everyday you learn something new :-)
