pretending brass in my pocket

Lisleman’s musical time traveling has taken me back to the late 70’s.

The Pretenders have brass in their pockets. Brass in a pocket has me thinking brass knuckles.  Today given the magic connectivity of trivial answers the internet provides, I know the expression is British slang for having money.

The Pretenders released “Brass in Pocket” in late 1979.

Chrissie Hynde in her 60's

As I listened to the lyrics (this song’s lyrics are hard to understand and full of slang) I found myself thinking it could be the theme song for social media and even blogging. Once again the wealth of trivia on the internet made it a simple task of not only uncovering the lyrics but also their slang meaning.

Intention, I feel inventive
Gonna make you, make you, make you notice
...
'Cause I'm gonna make you see
There's nobody else here
No one like me
I'm special (Special)
So special (Special)
I gotta have some of your attention
Give it to me

Another Pretenders favorite is “Back on the Chain Gang”. There is one line from that song I wish I could work into a post.
“... The phone, the TV and the news of the world got in the house like a pigeon from hell, ooh oh ooh oh…”
I don’t care much for pigeons.

My baby sister is terrified of pigeons. She calls them "winged vermin."

I don't care much for The News of the World! Thankfully ceased publication now.

Hey, yet another moment of learning from blogging. I thought the lyrics were just referring to news in a general sense. So there was a newspaper called "The News of the World"? I love learning via blogging. thanks

Oh now don't tell me there is actually a pigeon from hell too.

I'm a huge Pretenders fan and being Australian with an English background I love talking/listening to slang!
Thanks for the 70's music time travel post Bill.

I find slang very interesting. Often it makes no sense but becomes common. thanks

I don't care much for pigeons either but especially any that come from hell.

I never understood anything about the song "Brass in Pocket". Even the title makes no sense to me. BUT Chrissie is looking awesome in her 60s.
