Bless the beast except swine

Just a quick post -
My daughter and I had a good laugh reading the caption under a picture in the local paper (not the above pic).

There's a picture of a Reverend blessing a dog. I couldn't easily find the picture but just picture a dog being held up getting blessed. The funny part is the newspaper caption:

"... the Blessing of the Beasts worship service that took place Aug. 29 at .....
Cats, dogs and a parrot were blessed at the service, which was followed by a PORK CHOP DINNER served by the congregation's United Methodist Men's group."

I capitalized the dinner selection. We found it funny that they would have this carnivorous dinner along with the blessing of the beasts. I'm guessing swine is NOT included in the blessing.

Some veggie type dinner would have more appropriate - don't you think?

Oh the above pic is from a recent cook-out that was unseasonable cool. Need to keep the dog warm.

Too funny!
Growing up Catholic, I never understood half the special blessing deals. My mom always went to have her throat blessed? What's with that?

I grew up the same. I remember the throat thing with two candles (unlit) placed on your throat.

I thought it would be cool to have the candles lit.

It's quite a contradiction, maybe they said a blessing before eating.

Reminds me of two things:
1. The Vicar of Dibley blessing the animals episode. So sweet!

2. When DH taught at a private university loosely affiliated with some church, they had this minister give the blessing before the annual faculty/staff dinner. He babbled on, asking the Good Lord to bless those who shared their wisdom with students, those who cooked the meals for the students, etc. when he got to those who emptied the trashcans of the students (this is not a paraphrase) a bunch of us sort of lost it and started giggling. Does the Lord really need this itemized list? Can't we just say "God Bless Us Everyone" and tuck into the meal? :-)

And, yes, a vegetarian meal would have been classier.

I agree and pasta and veggie dinner would have been much more appropriate and love your pic!!

@unknown mami - I suspect they did say a blessing before the meal. Thanks for dropping a comment

@FF - I'm guessing this Vicar thing is a UK show? I agree that some of the church activities can seem strange.

@yorksnbeans - I always like to include a picture and I just happened to have this one from the other day with a dog in it. thanks
