once upon a friday fragment

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I posted, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of youtube screening,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tweeting,
As of some one rudely pleading, pleading on my smartphone screaming.
(Edgar don’t roll too fast in your grave.)

It would be fascinating to have Edgar Allan Poe join the Friday Fragment meme. Well that’s not going to happen but you can join. It’s central location is at Mrs. 4444’s blog. Leave your ravens at home please.

Half-Past Kissin' Time

How do you feel about old poems or songs being repurposed and recycled for today’s social media world? For example:

“I Will Follow Him” could be a twitter theme song.

“I Want You To Want Me” by Cheap Trick could be slightly modified for our modern social media world.

Didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I, see you postin
Oh, didn’t I, didn’t I, didn’t I, see you postin
I want you to comment me.
I need you to retweet me.

A friend sent me this bible cartoon. Now putting the bible into cartoon format (I've seen some parts of it done for children) is another example of repurposing.

Bump the app before you bump in bed
Is the slogan for an unusual app useful in the small (isolated?) country of Iceland.

from the developers’ site:

“This feature enables users of the app to bump two phones together to instantly see how they are related. The “Incest Prevention” is a fun feature that the user can enable through the options menu which will notify him with both text and sound if the one he bumps with someone who is too related to him.”

Writing or being able to tell someone “decades ago I …” really does date you. It's ok with me because recalling a decades old memory is better than losing it.

Remember what the Beatles told us. “Your inside is out when your outside is in. Your outside is in when your inside is out.” So C'mon.

In an old Hagar the Horrible (decades, as I recall) the dunce character, the one with the upside down funnel on his head, was overboard and treading water. A boat passed by and a sailor leaned over and asked "Capsize?" The little fellow replied 6 7/8. It follows, when your outside is in your cap size may be 6 7/8.

I see you are proud of your decades old recall. Capsize - good one. This is a good dinner joke for cruises.

I watched the first few episodes of "The Following" with Kevin Bacon and after that I don't think I can ever "enjoy" Edgar Allen again.

He said "cast the nets" hehehehe

lisleman said...

I never heard of "The Following". thanks

I did a post way back when about what Twittith would look like in the time of Poe or Frost. Working within the confines of 140 characters would of ruined them. http://www.artofbeingconflicted.com/2011/06/are-we-making-progess.html

I think real creativity isn't what we see on social media. That is just quips and one liners.

Wait a minute are you including blogs in your social media category? I certainly agree about FB and twitter (which I still don't desire to join). I'll check out your twitter poetry. thanks

You always slay me with your creative wordsmith-ing. When I grow up, I wanna be just like you. ;)

Farewell to Friday for a Temporary Hiatus

Wow. And they really think that these days folks would check before they bed? Very optimistic. Sort of sad to be totally unaware of any familial relationship :-( "What's going on?"

Some of my favorite movie quotes are pretty outdated as well. Nothing makes you feel old like chatting with youngsters and getting the blank stare ;-)

lisleman said...

That's your problem, you can't grow up and be like me. I never grew up. (I have grown out but another issue) I can relate to the Peter-Pan dilemma. You're too nice, thanks

lisleman said...

The check before bed issue is the small population of limited diversity in Iceland. Most everyone is related to one another. I guess sometimes too too closely. Don't worry about the blank stares on kids. It's blank memories that are worrisome. thanks

Love your Poe parody!
It is much better to have a novel than a blank page. The only thing I find frustrating with my decades old memory is the appearance of an occasional faded line.

lisleman said...

thanks - Faded lines are no fun. I'm not sure if there are good ways to bring faded memories into focus.

"Cast the nets" Funny!

Eddie would add a bit of class to our Friday Fragments, wouldn't he? Well, class and probably a bit of morbidity.

I love your song repurposing. I'm sitting here trying to think of one right now and completely drawing a blank. I'll have to pop on by later with one.

And I'm snickering at your "Reactions" in your comments, "Sorry I fell asleep". Ha! That's funny.

I just stumbled across a whole box of poetry books now that I finally have a chance to go through the boxes my sister gave me at the beginning of the year. I bet you could have a field day re-purposing them.

I saw Cheap Trick in concert when I was in the 7th grade.

Thanks for you comment on my bathing suit post. It was great to get your perspective, since maybe and certain someone and I had words over his lack of sympathy :-). I'm glad to know it resounded with you.

Eddie Edgar - it took me a minute to make the connection. He would probably throw a raven at you if you called him Eddie. I put that reaction thing on there so long ago I don't even notice it anymore. I wonder how many readers even notice it. I'm glad you didn't fall asleep. thanks

I lack sympathy at times. Probably too many times. It was a good truthful post. 7th grade and Cheap Trick. I saw Alice Cooper when I was a teen before he was huge hit. Concerts in later years were better for me. I was better able to focus on the music.
thanks

You have such a gift for adapting poems and songs. You nailed Edgar and Cheap Trick!

"Call me,
Call me, call me anytime
Call me." (Blondie)
Well, not really, cuz that would be weird, cuz I don't know you.
I think Edgar would be delighted with your creativity. But what do I know?
I'm with you, better to be able to remember decades ago than not.

lisleman said...

That was a good Blondie song that would be tweet me, tweet me now. Did you ever hear the Blondie song, "Rapture"? It's a weird fun one about aliens. thanks

I saw an article about the anti-incest Icelandic app. But would you walk up to anyone you were remotely interested in to find out before you got too involved (which seems presumptuous) or wait until things got serious (which could be mightily disappointing)?

lisleman said...

I've never been to Iceland. I don't know. Are the women there extra hot? I think most would wait until the relationship moved along some. Of course, some move quicker than others.
thanks

Secret Agent Woman said...

Well, I wouldn't be approaching the women. But I'd hate to invest in even a date if the guy was going to turn out to be my first cousin.

lisleman said...

But it makes for a great post on your blog :)

Secret Agent Woman said...

Ha ha! I hope to NEVER have that experience!

Pat Fortunato said...

Every Step You Take by the Police should be the theme song for social media. I'll be watching you . . . Creepy! patnyc.com

lisleman said...

It certainly will not be "Message in a Bottle". No one is going to wait that long. "Every Breath You Take" I believe was claimed by the NSA for their theme song. thanks.
