why I don’t bake

It was hot. I was just a lost teen hanging with friends looking for adventure that summer of 1968. Then this news came singing over the radio.

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

(we didn’t use WTF back then but that’s what comes to mind today) What a cake with sweet green icing left out in the rain? What a waste. I could only assume that Richard Harris couldn’t plan a picnic to save his life. I wonder if Mr. Harris ever bake a cake in his life.

About ten years later I discovered that Donna Summers baked that cake. She worked hard for the money, both dancing and singing.

I’ve never baked a cake. I’m ok with the microwave and toaster. I blame MacArthur Park. Why go to all the bother of baking and spreading sweet green icing (you need to make your own icing right?) only to have an idiot take the cake out into the rain. (BTW like many guys back then I did own a striped pair of pants or two)

Hey you still here? Good. It would really be cool to see (like an SNL skit) my wife break out into that Donna Summer's song after a cake fell in the oven.

"it took so long to bake it ...."

My word, you do make me laugh... most of the time I'm pretty sure I'm not clever enough to get it, but I still laugh!

My thoughts are of today WTF...makes a Taylor Swift song sound good. Oh music from back in the day...too funny!

Funny lyrics sang in such a serious way makes for an unusual song. Thanks, always good to spread a laugh.

It does have a good tune and sounds great as just an instrumental. The story behind the lyrics is interesting. Lost love, a park and I guess some left over cake from a birthday party. thanks

Taylor should do a cover of this. She sings about lost love often. Also aren't her ex-boyfriends a bit like cakes left out in the rain?
thanks

Good thing Mary bakes or u might change your mind

Her baking does make it easier to not try baking but on the other hand her great cooking means I would be bound to fail. If she didn't bake great stuff I would spend more money eating stuff from bakeries. thanks

Wasn't that the longest song ever...maybe not but it felt like it. Seven minutes is a really long song. I could of made a cake batter while the song played and had time to spare. I always thought the song was symbolic of drugs as it was the 60's but it turns out it is symbolic of Jimmy Webb's break up with Susan Ronstadt.

"made a cake batter while the song played" - funny. See I could have used that in the post. I would of had to say "my wife could have..." Yes I discovered that background too when I was preparing the post. I don't think I ever tried to figure out the song back then. I probably just tuned to a different radio station when it came on. It's top of the list of strange lyrics. thanks
