a manly blog

A few clowns short of my followers may have noticed that I enjoy adapting lyrics to a blog theme. Once I posted:

he said
blog like a man
talk like a man
blog like a man my son
no follower worth crawling on the earth
so blog like a man my son

I decided to write a post for this round of Dude Write (thanks Bee at Living Off Script for the reminder). Blog dudes posting for fame and glory. Yeah, that’s a bit over the top, too hardcore. No I have not gone completely gong-ho on this idea.

I agree that the blogging world is very dominated by women. Just look at many of the blog memes/games especially the ones with a list of questions. Often they will have female only type questions. I’m not complaining. It’s all good and often I learn something new.

Blogging doesn’t need rules. The lack of guidelines creates both interesting unique postings and crappy unique postings.

No I don’t need to write about my manly scratching. Even my post on whale turds actually was very female related since it involves the essence (ambergris) of some perfumes. My goal is write what I feel about the life around me and hopefully lighten it up for a random reader. Life is co-ed (save this idea of future life not being co-ed anymore for a later post).

I write about Baby Boomers - my generation - talking ‘bout my generation, my generation baby - why don’t you all fade - NOTE we use the term “baby” in many various ways. Got that baby?

Often I sit picking away the moments that make up a dull day. Then I’ll stop, take time to smell the wind. I’m left wondering what the hell did that dude eat. After I recover, I have another post idea to share.

I posted a pic of these manly potatoes once

As for most blogs my topics are not gender specific. Topics are viewed differently but I think the differences are more related to experiences than gender. Generation probably impacts the writing more than gender. Mary Shelley created the great Frankenstein monster and I know there are guys who write-up recipes. I do wish more guys would blog because they are missing the good sharing of ideas, stories, even jokes.

Day after day I’m more confused. Yet I look for the light through the pouring rain. You know that’s a game I hate to lose. And I’m feeling the strain. Ain’t it a shame. So blog like yourself.

"Blog like yourself". Truer words have never been spoken. Well, someone once said "getting kicked in the groin hurts like hell" - those were also very true words!

Blog like yourself and for yourself....I think you are like you write true to self. I always enjoy my visits here.

When I first started blogging about ten years ago, the blogosphere had more guys, I swear. And most of the women weren't mommy bloggers. Maybe they blogged about their kids once in a while, but that wasn't their niche. No one had niches, really, because we had all just discovered blogging!

Well, I'm glad you found the dudes!

I never thought of the gender division in blogging. You are right that it seems to be heavily weighed in favor of the women. I, however, was looking at my list of the blogs I follow and it seems rather 50/50 between men and women. Oddly, if I throw in the criteria "which are my absolute favorites it's about 2 to 1 in favor of the men. And nearly all of my favorites tend to be written by baby boomers. (there's two or three exceptions)

So it would seem I have a real thing for baby boomer men....or at least like to listen to what they have to say.

Thanks. Your interests and what you are looking for in a blog does change the gender ratio. Since you are a boomer, it makes sense to me that you want to hear from other boomers. Do you tend to go for lighter funnier stuff? I like the focus of your take on odd news you present on your blog. The ease of setting-up a blog focused on niche probably results in many niche blogs such as photos, poetry, kids, jokes, etc. Of course with no rules there are plenty of exceptions.

thanks The way I remember it was blogging was first embraced by younger under 30 crowd and it was more like FB is today with little tidbits of your daily activity. FB and twitter popularity had a big impact on blogging. I think pinterest is having an impact too.

lisleman said...

thanks and I hope I can keep true to that idea.

Yeah those are very true and scary words too. Not sure why but I tend to think of "sharp stick in the eye" before the groin. thanks for browsing over.

I have a pretty even distribution between men and women in the bogs I read. As well as a fair number of male readers. I tend to sy away from mommy blogs, blogs about pets and blogs about things like fashion, and go more for the blogs about life.

The "mommy blog" description is not too accurate. I know you are a mom since you have posted about your kids. One's family will come up in a blog about life. I think I know what you mean by "mommy blog" but some are hard to classify if they change the topics often enough.
thanks

WHen I say "mommy blog," I don't mean blogs written by women who happen to be mothers. Mine is definitely not one. I mean blogs that are consistently aout the kiddos. They bore me.

lisleman said...

Oh I would not call yours a mommy blog. Most of the women bloggers I follow do not have mommy blogs. I don't mind reading about kids but yes if that is all that is ever written then it gets old. I also think (might be wrong here) a new mommy is more likely to be too overly focused on writing about just the baby/toddler. I also don't care for blogs that just do giveaways. A little variety is best.

I guess there are more women blogging than men, but I actually read quite a few 'dude' blogs. Although, like yours, they aren't gender specific, but deal with things that interest me, just like most of the women-authored blogs I read.

lisleman said...

I agree that interesting things will not be gender specific. IMHO - the larger number of women bloggers is because women tend to be more social than men. Of course there are exceptions but I think that's the reason. thanks

FB and Twitter definitely had an effect, I agree.

Speaking from the senior viewpoint, men still die earlier than women, and my friends are mostly widows. So that gives me the idea that there are more women with time to spare and some of us blog. We women also blab it all ; men are more guarded. Speaking in general terms, that is.

lisleman said...

I had not thought of the outliving us situation. More social versus more guarded - we agree on that. Thanks for taking a bit of your time to browse over here and share your thoughts.

I certainly enjoy your witty banter! Keep on writing dude!

Welcome aboard! As you guessed, we're about promoting Dudes writing. It doesn't have to be tremendously manly, just written by a guy. It isn't anti-Dudette as many of the lurking ladies will attest. Some of our past winners were very emotional pieces of writing.

I love the potatoes.

Glad you're here. Check out our ongoing flash fiction competition (flash us button on the toolbar)

I don't write gender specific blogs either, but I do seem to have a mostly female readership. Probably due to the disproportionate number of women bloggers.

lisleman said...

thank you. I will banter on.

lisleman said...

It was fun to join in. I didn't consider your meme anti-dudette but I just wanted to throw the question out there. Believe it or not we ate those potatoes and it didn't hurt at all. thanks

lisleman said...

I agree with your conclusion. Either there is just more of them or they just tend to comment more. thanks

I agree completely with the idea of blogging like yourself. Some days I am somewhat crass in my posts, while other days I am sappy/emotional. I think that casting yourself in a certain mold does nothing but hold you back, because if you have defined yourself as a certain individual with certain beliefs told in a specific tone, you are denying yourself the opportunity to be completely honest.

Welcome to Dude Write.

I like to think that I blog like myself. I don't necessarily set out to tell a story aimed at one gender or another, just to tell what's going on in my life in a manner that's somewhat entertaining. Occasionally, that happens to be about tractors and farmy stuff, and I try to do a decent job of explaining myself, because it isn't necessarily something everyone's familiar with.

That being said, I've done posts that, after the fact, would seem to be a perfect fit for the Dudes, but my female readers like them just as much. That shouldn't be unexpected, but it always makes me happy.
