fancy friday fragments

Do you fancy a fragment or two?

I’m very glad you stopped in for a look. You will find a few fragments here but if you are still hungry for more browse over to Mrs. 4444’s place. She collects links to many more.

Mommy's Idea

Do you read or listen to books?

I read mostly but I’m not that quick and have returned a library book unfinished more than once.  Would listening be quicker?

My wife has gotten into the habit of listening to audiobooks in the car. That was my introduction to them. It’s a good way to pass the time on a long car trip. However, if you can’t stand the story or characters it quickly becomes a form of torture. I found an interesting discussion about audiobooks - here.

Would you consider this serendipity? I finished mowing the lawn this evening and after cleaning up (you did clean up before reading this blog - right?) I read this post by Lilly (she’s an Aussie from OZ you know) about a crazy neighbor’s desire to mow her lawn.

I’m not sure how I would react if this happened to me. Someone mowing for free might be hard to turn down. I doubt this Aussie guy wants to travel here to mow my lawn (Lilly might want to send him).

Being blog neighbors doesn’t require you to do much with the physical appearance of your place. That slacker idea I follow doesn't apply if you post pictures of your place.  I have a blog neighbor who recently took us on a tour of her place and then in the next post gave a tour of her town. I know her as Shrinky and she lives on the Isle of Man. I believe you can still catch the tours.

This week has turned into uncommon word week here at A Few Clowns Short - a plethora of terms to enhance my phraseology - not really but I worked in a few uncommon ones.
zoopraxiscope and zoetrope in this post
zilch and Chaturanga in this post

James Bond will drink a beer in an upcoming movie. This made the news. As it should. Martinis are not the only sophisticated drink.

Just looking for opinions and I know we all have them, so share. Which of the following do you think is an expression so worthy of a Monday?
  • nowhere nuts
  • salsa sliding
  • sleepy soup
  • manic mustard

I prefer reading books over listening to audio books, simply because I am a visual learner.  Never did like the radio!  Rarely, I'll listen to music on a CD.  I tried an audio book once but did not like it--if my eyesight ever fails, I keep them in mind though.

I'm partial to Manic Monday.  I hum the tune in my head.  But I'm the one with earworms.

I used to drive an hour each way to work.  During that period of my life I listened to MANY audio books and LOVED them.

If I put one in and didn't LIKE IT, I just stopped listening to it and exchanged it at the library for another.

BTW - you CAN renew your library books you know!  In fact, at our library MOST books can be renewed two or three times, and they are checked out for a month at a time - - - so you SHOULD be able to finish any book that has even a modicum of interest in three months, no?

My husband listens to audiobooks because he is on the road so much.  I prefer to read. I have a Nook and I download the books I want to read from there.

My mondays are usually salsa sliding... but I'd rather have sleepy soup ;-)

That could be a quote.  Most everything is sleepy in the morning for me.  thanks

I enjoy readin' a book.  I love the smell and the feel of the pages between my fingers.  Yep, call me old~fashioned!  Heeehehehe!

I have to tell ya, I'm intrigued by Manic Mustard.

God bless ya man and have yourself one magnificent weekend!!!

 better than mean Mr. Mustard
have a great weekend too
thanks

lisleman said...

I guess it depends on where you are while reading or listening.
thanks

Oh I know I can renew.  We can do it online renewals too.  If I lose interest in a book then I just return it.  Also, I read non-fiction and some historical fiction.  thanks

The Bangles ?  It's just another manic Monday.
thanks

It's easier to pause and think about what you just read too.  Of course, I probably pause and think too often which is why I take too long to finish the book.

I haven't listened to an audio book since my kids were little.  They enjoyed them before they could read.  Maybe I should try one that isn't for children under the age of four!

Yes the whole industry changed with MP3 player technology.  That linked story talks about that change.  I'm not a big listener but many are.
thanks

We tried listening to books on tape once when we traveled.  I went immediately to sleep!  :(  But if someone wants to mow my lawn, I'll be so happy!!!

I guess it would depend on whether you are a good listener. Are you going to interrupt the book that you are listening too just to have your say?

lisleman said...

Browse over to Lilly's blog and let her know you'll take that mower guy off her hands.
thanks

Interrupt the story being read?  You don't interrupt movies do you?  One problem but reading and listening is distractions.
thanks

Bond, I'm not...but I would much rather have an icy cold beer to a martini any day.  And to answer your question, I'd prefer to READ my books.  But, there are advantages of recorded books...you can listen to them as  you drive.

lisleman said...

 yes to beer!
While in the car has been about the only time I've ever listened to them.

I could use someone to mow my lawn...

Yes on the surface it sounds like a simple decision.  Browse over to Lilly's blog and let her know.
thanks

I prefer reading to audio books. I don't learn well by listening. I have to force myself sometimes to listen to Spanish sometimes so that I can learn it by writing and by hearing it.

lisleman said...

Living where you do provides constant Spanish listening I imagine.  I know the act of note writing helped reinforce lessons for me.
thanks

Yes, I am letting him know that you have a yard that wants doing...pronto. I felt bad after writing that post. today he gives me a bag of tomatoes from his garden. Its like he knew that I wrote a post about him (he doesn't as I have never mentioned my blog...but my guilty conscience.....)

lisleman said...

You agreed he might be a control freak.  It appears he is nice control freak.  He did hand them to you - not throw them at you - right?
If he knows you want to mow it for the exercise I would think he would understand.
thanks

It would be hard to listen to a book read if the voice was not pleasant in some way.  I like the 'nowhere nuts' expression myself.  Finally making my way around the FF.

Secret Agent Woman said...

I rarely like audiobooks because I'd rather hear my own voice in my head than most reader's.

lisleman said...

thanks - I hope you are not nowhere being nuts.  If you are being nutty have fun.  I do.

lisleman said...

There are different experiences for sure.  Your own voice is nice if you are on good terms with yourself.  thanks doc.
