thought for food

Facebook lured me in - While on FB last night, I noticed the greatest creation from Dennys:

Maple Bacon Sundae

The thought of jumping in the car and driving over to the nearest Dennys raced through my mind and had my mouth watering. I came to my senses when I found myself unable to rationalize the sudden late night trip to my wife. This wonderful combination of tastes will need to wait for another day.

But I did join the Dennys FB fan page. I have now received coupons and that will help build my case with my wife. She loves coupons. I have witnessed first hand her and her mom having lengthy discussions focused on coupons.

Popcorn fight - The nation's cinema operators vs. the FDA and consumer health advocates

I love popcorn and munching it at the movies is like American apple pie which never made it at the theaters. The cinema (that sounds classier than movie) operators are fighting the rules to display calorie content of menu items such as those tubs of popcorn.

The concession stand sales are a third of their revenue. Seeing a sign with some big number of calories on it would not influence me much. What does influence me is the dollar amount they charge for the popcorn. Also, I don’t believe there is any butter in that “hot butter”. I always skip the extra petroleum on my popcorn.

No strong opinion on popcorn displays but I sure hope the regulators stay away from my pint Guinness (it's not just for Breakfast you know).

It sounds like we have differing opinions on the issue, but I think they should definitely add the calorie information to menu boards. I think people grossly underestimate the calorie content of the food that they're putting into their bodies, especially since it's so hard to get that kind of information from restaurants (and theaters) to begin with. While it might not change YOUR behavior, it does change mine, and I'm sure that I can't be the only one who will make adjustments based on that number. With the amount of money that the obesity epidemic is costing us these days, anything that can help get people educated and making smarter decisions is ok in my book.

That's not to say that things like popcorn or beer (or soda, or chocolate, or bacon sundaes) should be banned, just that people should learn how to eat things like that in moderation. Anything can fit into a healthy diet.

Sorry, that's what happens when you get a public health worker going on the topic :)

And that bacon sundae looks surprisingly tasty.

I sort of have a thing for chocolate covered bacon. My coworker brought me a chocolate bacon donut. It wasn't great, sadly.

I am a proponent of listing calories.

Hey I'm more than Ok with getting your opinion, thanks. Better education - good - more disclosure - good. Balance is the key thing IMHO. I think people can get overwhelmed with diet information and maybe the added stress doesn't due them any good. What I would like to see but have doubts if it would ever happen is responsible marketing. Marketing that considers the downside of over indulging in their products. thanks.

I'm not that big on chocolate myself. It's just Ok with me. I would rather have maple flavored bacon than chocolate but that's just me. We certainly do have lots of flavor choices today. thanks

Heh! ... I think that there's something wrong with me ... I'm immune to food pictures ... I eat to live ... strange that you should mention popcorn - I learned how to make it only a few weeks ago, I was soooo proud of myself ...

In these parts we used to call a cinema a "bioscope" - I have no idea wher this comes from or if it is still used ...

You're right. This will not help my current dieting efforts.

Mmmm. I so rarely go to the movies that a TUB of popcorn with all the fat and salt you can muster is fine by me. And lemonade.

Oddly enough, I think a bacon and maple sundae sounds kinda good...

sorry about that

bioscope - sounds like something a doctor would use. The word "biograph" was used here long ago for name of theaters. It comes from the movie company called Biograph Company.
thanks.

If orville redenbacher can come up with a 100 calorie bag, so can a movie theater.

First, thanks for stopping by my blog and commenting. I'm glad you did because i base all of my major life decisions around where/when/what I'm eating next. I can't decide whether to be upset or happy they have started to add the calorie count. Once, I think it's bad to obsess over it but we should be made aware.

Can't wait to root around your blog for awhile. ;)

I think you are right about it being good business to offer a lower calorie choice. McDonalds did well with coming up with alternative choices and many people will still go for whatever they want but at least they have a choice. thanks

thanks for checking out A Few Clowns Short and feel free to root around as much as you like. It's bad to obsess about anything even blogging. There is a search box on the sidebar, may I suggest the fat ass donuts as an appetizer.
thanks

That sundae looks revolting to me! And although I like movie popcorn (no extra oil), I vastly prefer the kind I make - air-popped with a little olive oil.

I returned the favor... surprised I didn't do it earlier!

I agree with you on the popcorn. No point to displaying nutritional value of "cinema" popcorn because nobody eats it for any reason other than its deliciousness value. We know it's bad. The logic of putting nutritional value on a tub of popcorn is right up there with putting it on the shot glasses at the bar. Nobody gives a damn. And even if they did, no one could read it anyway.

lisleman said...

thanks - Yes being able to read nutritional signs in a dark bar after a few drinks would be almost impossible. It's already hard enough to see the people you are trying to pick up. It WAS when I played that sport.

I only eat popcorn at the movies and I only go about 3 times a year, so I don't give a hoot what the calorie/fat count says. The calories have been on those boxes of candy they sell for years and that hasn't stopped too many people from enjoying some M&Ms in the movies either.

very good point - now pass the popcorn
