you don't know what it's like

Actually you probably do.

So often we believe we have some unique feeling but most likely that feeling is shared or have been felt by many others.

While not a big emotional love type feeling, I had a good feeling of discover today on Itunes.

Remember Lulu?

If you are too young and want to see some sixties stuff check out "To Sir with Love". Both the movie and the song are worth it. The Scottish singer Lulu had a golden hit with that song.

What I discovered on Itunes was that Lulu also did a cover of "To Love Somebody". That song has been covered by artists from Janis Joplin to Michael Bolton.

"To Love Somebody" was written by Barry and Robin Gibb. Robin's twin brother, Maurice was married to Lulu for a few years (69-73). The Bee Gees had a big hit with this song but it was originally written for Otis Redding. Otis unfortunately died in a plane crash before he could record it.

Lulu first hit was her version of "Shout". Not only is the music good but this clip really takes you back with the dancing and outfits.

Oh yeah, the covers -
You can find an hour or more worth of "To Love Somebody" covers on youtube. I didn't watch all of them because after watching this one, I decided I needed to share this. This young lady has a great voice and I give her credit for offering this recording on youtube. I have no idea who she is but it would be fun to take her to a karaoke night.

Do you enjoy covers?
BTW - Lulu is still performing.

You have struck a chord here! I remember going to see the movie in Westwood, CA. with my first serious boyfriend and just loving the entire experience. Who didn't love that song? You've also taught me something with the info about the Gibbs writing this for Otis Redding.

Otis was my favorite singer then. My BFF at the time drove her mother's white convertible LeMans with an 8 track. She'd have Otis Redding's "Tenderness" cued up and the minute I hit the front seat, she'd turn it on and we would sing it at the top of our lungs and oooh and aaah over the magic that was Otis. It feels like yesterday but it was 1966. He was dead a year later.

thanks for sharing that memory. Singing in the car is fun (for me maybe not the passengers). My favorite karaoke song is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes".
thanks again.

To Sir With Love is my favourite movie ever. I can still see the girl walking with her gift for 'Sir' as Lulu belts the song... You know they did a sequel too with some of the characters from the original. I loved it... but then I am biased!

Lulu was great in To Sir With Love. I must be getting old for sure, I didn't remember the connection between Lulu and one of the Gibbs. Cool post, Mr lisleman, you found some great videos for us to watch and dance to. If the photo is a recent photo of Lulu, then she is indeed a lulu, wow, she looks wonderful.

Yes that's a recent (as in years) photo. My wife asked me the same question. I should have put a little more info on that photo. After posting and my wife's question I did a quick search and found a British news article about how great Lulu looks on some Caribbean beach which was December 2010.
I didn't know about the Bee Gees connection until I wrote this. It is reassuring to see an entertainer survive the crazy world of celebrities and rock and roll so very well.

Yep, a dolly right through. Saw a video clip of here on a visit to british troops in Iraq where she announced her presence on the secure comms network with the lulu scream... the taleban eavesdroppers must have had a coronary!

I've heard the name before. A few years I gave my wife a CD collection of women in music. Her song "Ricochet" is included in the set.

"To Sir with Love" is a favorite of mine - both the movie and the song. Ah, Sidney Poitier! But the '65 video is a bit before my memory.

As for covers, my answer is "sometimes." Very occasionally I hear one that impresses me, but more often I prefer the original I'm going to stick with the BeeGees version of "To Love Somebody." It feels cleaner.
