Pillow Talk

Pssst - slide on over here I have a question?

Pillows and women - what’s the connection?

I don’t get it. I never took decorating 101 but I imagine there must be a lesson on pillows. I suspect most of the pillows purchased don’t even get used much. Well in my sense of the word “used” which means some part of your body presses against the pillow.

“Don’t sit on that pillow you’ll ruin it!”

Ruin it? What does it have some destiny to be used by a future goddess eating grapes? Are we saving it for our heirs?

Is the function of a pillow just appearance?

Oh I look so soft, fluffy and warm BUT you can’t touch me. I’m just here to tease you.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have traveled a good amount over my years. Never once did I pack a pillow or even thought of bringing a pillow. I like to sleep with a pillow but I’m not attached emotionally to my pillow. Seriously you want my pillow I’ll send it to you for the cost of shipping and handling.

My wife, now that’s a different story. She has brought her pillow along many times. Reminds me of a kid with a constant companion teddy bear.

But I must say my wife is NOT into pillows as much as our one daughter.

I stayed at our daughter house one night recently by myself. I had to dig through pillows to find the bed. Why do women (very certain her husband has nothing to do with it) bury their beds in pillows? Is there any practical reason? Maybe it helps them find the bed.

Luxury hotels - Here you will find more evidence that pillows have higher function than just a place to rest a head. I’m certain you can correlate the room rate with the pillow count. (note to self - next check-in ask if I can get a discount for taking a low pillow count room)

For more research on this and other decorating dilemmas check out the blog Catalog Living. (the two pics in this post were taken from there and they apparently took them from a catalog)

If this pillow mystery get answered quickly in the comment section then maybe we could move on to my next burning question - candles and women.

(warning or tip - what? Well depending on your views the following info might be warning or a tip/suggestion. While researching this pillow topic (what you don’t research?) I came across a web site named pillowtalktoys net. Lets just said I didn’t see any pillow products but they sell some humorous stuff.)

How weird is it that I just bought two decorative pillows yesterday! I am very specific about my pillows.

I don't know about someone saying "don't use that pillow" for whatever reason. I do like some pillows and I like to lean on some as I sit on the couch; one for an armrest when I sit on the couch in the middle of the couch; and sometimes a pillow is on my lap to hold my book at an angle so I don't have to hold a book.

And all of Matt's friends know they can't sleep on the bird pillows in the basement ...one was teasing me the next morning and said that he enjoyed sleeping on the bird pillows and drooled all over it. Dad, I'm sure there are many decorative things in my house that you can poke fun of...vintage keys in a jar, old books that sit on a wooden tray, etc.

I'm not so sure you're right. My husband is the pillow man. He sleeps with a minimum of 3 usually 4. He loves lots of decorative pillows on the bed, the couches, etc. Our new couch had to be overstuffed with down so it was comfy and squishy enough for him. I'm telling you, he was very girly about it!

thanks for sharing your reaction. You decorate very well and can still get away with having small breakable things. I still don't understand the appeal of pillows.

lisleman said...

I imagine you are practical about your pillows. Some treat them like art pieces. thanks

lisleman said...

just curious will you be sitting or laying on them?

lisleman said...

maybe he took decorating 101 and understands - thanks

Yeah, I agree, there are too many pillows around - doing nothing ... I've just got one that I carry around like a teddy ... oops, did I say that?

lisleman said...

you are just a big softy underneath.

I just recently read how many designers are going back to the old look of just having a blanket on the bed. I couldn't go for that b/c then I would have to smooth and tuck every morning. Throwing a blanket over the whole mess is easier.

lisleman said...

when I get out of bed I usually don't look back. thanks

the pillows on our furniture are practical, comfortable and only incidentally are they DECORATIVE. i do love good looking things, sugar, but in my home they really do have to serve a purpose! (i LOVE catalog living! what a hoot it is!) xoxoxox

I love the way changing pillows can completely change the look of a room. And we use our pillows. I have four teens - I could never manage to get them not to use the pillows.
I travel with my bed pillow. But, I only own very few pairs of shoes. Does that make up for that at all?

lisleman said...

shoes ? should that be on the list of women wonders? Thanks for pointing out the ease of look you get with pillows. I have witnessed looking at the same room at the same time and not seeing what my wife saw. Thanks for the help.

lisleman said...

practical comfortable - I understand those reasons. Thanks for joining the discussion and stay comfortable on those pillows. sounds sensible to me

You really don't know what's up with women and pillows? I might face some serious repercussions for this since it is obviously a well kept secret, but the truth is that whenever we get the chance and are left alone we have pillow fights. Men are never allowed to watch, but some seem to have senses that this is what happens whenever women are left alone.

lisleman said...

the secret is out! Thanks! I always thought the women just talked and drank wine. Now it makes sense that you would carry your own pillow with you. It's like packing heat for the next pillow fight. I love it when things come together - thanks

We just like thing pretty and fluffy! Besides they are great for the grands to throw in the floor to sit on, use in a lap for a plate, prop up when the lungs are congested and don't forget what fun a great pillow fight is!!! Woohoo.

Oh no, I hope I'm not spillin' any secrets here. Sorry ya'll!!! God bless

lisleman said...

They are easier to keep than bunnies or baby chicks which also are pretty and fluffy. thanks for sharing

Here you are talking pillow talk and you didn't even get "pillow" on my Friday Five!

I love the softness and the accent pillows give to furniture. That's my final answer and I'm sticking with it!

Barbara said...

I love pillows AND candles, but I don't worry about my pillows - besides looking pretty, they're there to be used and can be replaced!

lisleman said...

you are right. I was confused by your Friday game maybe because you said it had something to do with math. I love math and did well with it in college so I think that took me in the wrong direction. Enough with my excuse, your answer here matches up with most of the comments. thanks

lisleman said...

I'm sure you know this but that combination of pillows and candles will result in at least pillows being replaced if you're not careful. It's good to know that you allow your pillows to be used (not for candle holders - right). thanks

Barbara said...

Oh, definitely not together!! lol Or even close! I used to fight fires - I'm paranoid about my candles!

lisleman said...

fight fires? - you are a retired firefighter, smokejumper?

Joanna Jenkins said...

Really?!?! You've never packed a pillow. Have you even been realllly glad to get home to your own pillow? (Can you tell I'm a pill packer and a big pillow fan :-)

lisleman said...

getting home to my own bed - yes. Not so much the pillow but as I said I prefer to sleep with one. It's not the sleeping pillows that puzzle me. It's pillow decoration. thanks

Jene said...

I don't really get the whole pillow thing either, but I have zero sense of style when it comes to things like that. We have four throw pillows that came with our couch. I like to lean against them and husband likes to throw them on the floor.

Love Catalog Living, it's one of my favorites.

secret agent woman said...

I only have pillows I use - ones on the couch, for instance, to lean against or to take a nap on the couch. There are three pillows on my bed - two of the normal sort, side by side and one small one so I can sit up and read. I don't understand the concept of non-functional pillows or having to move a bunch of them to sleep. But pillow comfort is important and I take my pillow if I think I'm going to be at a hotel or something where they'll only have big hard pillows.

lisleman said...

thanks for the support - maybe we should start a pillow-challenged support group

lisleman said...

thanks for sharing. Do they still sell those big ones with arms? Those were great for sitting up and reading. I can imagine some thinking they were ugly. Now I need to ask if we still have those. thanks

The pillow is there to be seen not touched. Never touched!

lisleman said...

Oh please invite me over so I can spill a few drinks around your place. You sound so strict.

Pillows - I like them for looks, and I like them for use. I don't think I'd ever buy a pillow that I would forbid anyone to touch, but at the same time, buying a pillow to enhance the look of a piece of furniture/room is the same as buying some stupid lamp - it's all in how you decorate (maybe you're plain and simple, drab and blah, frilly and sparkly, whatever...) If you come to my home, you can certainly use my pillows however you wish. I guess. wait, let me move that designer one from the couch before you sit down... HA

lisleman said...

thanks for stopping over here. I get the lamp thing. Hey remember "A Christmas Story" - great lamp - fragile Italian too
Anyway IMHO lamps and pillows not the same thing. Even designer lamps get turned on.
thanks again

It was an owl. So I'm thinking it flew away. Stupid pillow.

right... but what happens if, when, you're so busy using your lamp, the bulb
burns out - and you have no replacement bulb. Then you have a lamp that
has no use. GASP!

Cyndy Newsome said...

I need for my pillows not to be touched, but my family doesn't listen. In fact, I am missing a couch pillow and it's driving me insane.
I sleep with three pillows. Is there something wrong with that??

lisleman said...

depends how big they are. Maybe the couch pillow ran away for lack of being touched. thanks for joining in the discussion.

I got my personal laptop fixed and can now (obviously) leave a comment on your blog! As for the pillow thing, I have no idea! I had several made for our new living room when we built our house years ago. No one EVER uses them for comfort, but I do like the pretty colors that accent the boring couch. And yes, I always bring my pillow to hotels--It's a Tempurpedic, after all...
